My heart says I'm a winner

PART 1: What’s a winner, really?

I proudly present what is, in my mind, without a doubt, the unequivocal winner of the #1wc, the Seiko SRP779 — Pepsi Turtle. I could list for days its qualifications. Its massive diameter. Its respectable(?) 40ish hour power reserve. Its non-sapphire crystal that I’m sure will see its first scratch during this gauntlet of a competition. Its nominally misaligned bezel that always seems to make you just a little thirsty. And so much more.

(side note, I don’t do smack talk well, but I can self-efface like a mother — that’s kinda like smack talk, right?)

Image

But here’s the thing. Eleven days into this competition, I’ve already bonded with this thing in a way that I was really hoping for, but didn’t expect. I thought I would miss my other watches more than I do. But I genuinely look forward to adventuring through life with this guy on my list. So in my heart — this thing has already won — even though I’m sure we’re gonna break a rule and get disqualified soon.

Will this argument be enough to convince you? I certainly hope not. Is it enough to convince me? Apparently? Does that something about both of us? Almost definitely.

PART 2: Psycho-analyzing mythozoological crustaceans

After what can only be considered too much time wasted pondering — I’ve come to the conclusion that the Disney villain that would wear my watch is Tamatoa (the treasure-loving decapod from Moana that loves everything shiny). This is the perfect watch for him for one simple reason: it makes him a better villain.

Image

From a distance, the Turtle’s got a little bit of flash. It's big, it's shiny, it catches your eye (I’ve been complimented several times in public for mine). But then you get up close … and it’s … nice.

Image

Don’t get me wrong, the look is strong, but it lacks in the details. Nothing’s totally lined up perfectly. The dial is just kinda flat and there. The hands are kinda weirdly shinier than everything else. And at 200m WR, it’s definitely not operational at his depth. In short, this is not the “grail” Tamatoa was looking for. And the presence of this Turtle in his collection only serves to fuel the ferocity of his lust for the unattainable.

Rolled out of bed too early and saw this post. My first thought was "day late/dollar short". This was posted on Day 12, not Day 11. Then I saw @UtahExplorer 's post and started calculating time zones and the very rough approximations that WC gives to time of posting (not real time stamps).

The rules must be strictly construed against the drafter. So, I think that you slide by, but both of you cut it too close for you to be comfortable in the future. Maybe I should throw it out to the community, especially trained nitpickers like @JBird7986, but I think this counts as "substantial compliance."

So it is 6:40 a.m. EDT as I review this message. WC is stating that this post was made 5 hours ago, which has it posted after midnight…EDT. That said, @Aurelian, you had previously indicated that PDT was the governor here, based on @Max‘s location and time zone. Based on that, this post would have been made just before midnight, PDT. So, while I want to say that he’s out (to further whittle down the competition), I concur with your conclusion. But this was cutting it very close.

I agree it was close, I was driving and out of service long enough times that I could not safely make a post earlier.

I will state that I did post my post at about 11:15pm Mountain time, which should have been 10:15pm Pacific, so I should have been clear by over an hour and a half.

I appreciate being left up for consideration, and will stand by the community ruling, but just wanted to make my case.

Edit to add: I almost wore a turtle for this crazy competition. Good choice, and good luck.

Yesterday definitely got away from me. Excuses, excuses. I knew it was gonna be a photo finish as I posted. But like my post says, I’m already a winner in my heart, so I went ahead and posted it. … and then started working on my Haiku.

PDT coming in clutch.

That's good to know that the hands are shinier than usual. I thought it was just my piece because it was a restored.

Got to love all strap options that you can do with it too! Wearing mine today ☺️

I’m so shiny !! 🎵 ..I’m hearing the song now!

Missed this post when it came out, glad I did now since it’s wonderfully written 👏 kudos

Didn’t know the fun crabs name either but have watched Moana about 50 times I think. Yay Dads!

I think Taratoa (?) would’ve dug my turtle (sadly, it’s hidden away currently to avoid temptation) , the ‘US special edition’ turtle

It about $500 used, but has: sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel, perfect alignment, both rubber and steel bracelet included, and a stunning dial .. lot of watch for the money

Thanks! Yes, the kids definitely keep Disney’s movies in heavy rotation. Sometimes it’s a pain, and sometimes it surprises you — Moana is legitimately one of my favorite movies, hahahahaha.

I’ve had my eye on that particular turtle for a bit. The turtle form-factor is crazy comfortable. Honestly, the best part of participating in the 1wc was discovering that I could probably wear it all the time and be very content.

That said, I’m probably picking up a new watch in a week or so, hahahahaha.

Yup moana is a fun one. Thankfully we are out of Elsa 24/7.

New watch incoming? Sweet!!

Well the special edition turtles 🐢 will wait till you’re ready.

I’d always thought turtles to big and clunky , till I tried one on, ka-pow 💥it fit like a glove and I was hooked.

BTW - tanuki is Japanese for ‘raccoon dog’ … is that the meaning with your WC alias? Just curious 👍
