Watch Buying/Selling Regrets?

Good morning Crunchers! Have you ever bought a watch that for some reason you saved up money for and had your eye on it for a while and then bought it but after some time, you fell out of love with it and sold it? Or have you ever regret selling a watch and wanted it back for some reason? I have 2 examples:

When I first saw the Citizen NY0040-09W, I wanted that watch so damn bad and I finally got one. But after buying the watch, I thought that it was too small for my wrist. and I sold it after less than a month. If it was just a little bit bigger, I would have kept it. But, it's just too small. Even at 42mm, it just looked small on me.

Second example: I bought a Seiko Core Chronograph SSB403P1 some years ago and for some stupid reason, I sold the watch and I am slowly on my way back to getting one soon. There's something about that watch that I like but I can't explain what it is! They also come in different colors too.

Well, those are my stories. How about yours?

Have a great one out there!

Quite a few really, but I have been lucky as not bought an expense watch that I did not like, apart from my Seiko Alpinist. I got into the Alpinist hype that was out a few years ago, and bought one, mainly as a weekend watch. The alignment was out as was the accuracy. I now need the watch regulated. Several cheaper watches that I forgot to size, or just didn't seem right on wrist, but if anything under £100 then not too bothered and will give away or to a charity shop. Mind you they all add up so more careful lately!

Sadly a few. But most recently, regret selling my Hamilton Cooper. I'm trying to focus on the bits of it that annoyed me to ease the pain.

I once had one of these beauties that I picked up on eBay. Barely worn. It was a steal. After a couple of great years with it, I figured I could make some money off of it. I sold it on for almost double what I had initially bought it for.....AAANNNDD it still hurts me to this day. Almost as soon as I got back from the post office I had a "WHAT HAVE I DONE" moment. Oh well.

Here are my four mistake types:

1. Hype watches. There are certain watches which much of the online watch community latch onto and behave as if everyone should own. E.g. For me Tissot PRX, Sea-Gull 1963, Casioak, F91-W, Q Timex. Beware the herd mentality.

2. Divers, steel GADA watches, almost anything over 38mm and NATO straps. All very popular. Took me a while to realise how bulky/chunky/ugly I personally find most of them.

3. Purchases driven by specs. Do I ever wear a watch when swimming? No - a pool always has a clock and I only swim in the sea on holiday when timekeeping isn't critical. Do I need water resistance unless I'm on a hiking/camping trip? No. Have I ever had a problem with a vintage watch with zero water resistance in daily wear? No. Do I care if a mineral crystal or my phone screen has a scratch? No. All subjective.

4. New watches. Used is always cheaper except at the crazy end of the market and it's going to get scratched anyway when worn.

The problem is that I've only learned these things from mistakes and experience.

“ 42mm looks small “ I am envious….. so many watches out there for larger wrists ! I have gifted about Four or five watches in the past and actually sold three, I never ponder on sold guitars , instruments, watches , surfboards, cars , I just keep on swimming 🏊 . At the end of my life I hope to have very little clutter for my wife and children to off load (daughters) … still jealous of making a 42mm watch look small 🙂

Yea, but the thing was is that I bought that Citizen NY0040-09W with a rubber strap that smelled like vanilla......Yeah. But the rubber strap just made the watch look small. But I have seen some that come with the stainless steel strap and for some reason, they make the watch look bigger. Must be a trick on the eyes I am not sure but, it's a nice watch altogether. Citizen are always nice 😀
