Calling all Speedy owners! What's your ownership experience?

I thought today, of all days, was a great time to ask: What is the Speedy ownership experience like? What are your likes and dislikes? Lately, I've been seriously considering acquiring a Speedmaster to mark a milestone next year. Specifically, the moonwatch professional with solid caseback and hesalite crystal. (Or maybe the hesalite sandwich) What is most on my mind is the water resistance - or lack thereof - of 50m. Does that hold you back? 50m is typically regarded as little more than splash proof. The last thing I want to do is invest significant money only to damage it washing my hands or dishes, or getting caught in a hard rain...

Service cost or other cost of ownership? What else what else comes mind? I love the Speedy design, history, and understated elegance. I intend to wear this everyday, or at least most days - no safe queen's here. In your experience, can the Speedy live up to that?

I would greatly appreciate your insight before launching down the rabbit hole of researching the 10,000 Speedy references to find the one for me. Thank you Crunchers!

I’ve had my speedy for about 4 years now and it’s been a great watch. I bought it probably for the same reason you want it…it’s history and it’s a great looking watch. I’ll tell you the water resistance doesn’t bother me at all, I don’t think a hard rain will bother it at all either as long as you take care of it. The new bracelet is much better than the one I got 4 years ago, I tried on the new white dial speedy yesterday and the bracelet is much more comfortable than mine. I did get a alligator strap for it and I like it a lot. My only “dislike” is it’s a manual and it should be wound daily. When I wind mine my fingers go numb, I think it’s about 40 turns of the crown? Other than that it was my first luxury watch I ever bought and I’ll own it for the rest of my life. Good luck with your decision.

My wife got mine for some about 4 years ago. It wasn’t my first choice of a luxury watch but it’s turned out to be the best. Strap monster for sure. Super comfortable and stylish. I don’t have the new bracelet that tapers so it’s a little less comfortable on that but still solid. The new bracelet is nice and very comfortable. As for water resistance I wouldn’t swim with it however I’m also not worried about washing my hands or rain. You’ll be fine. Remember, if it can go to the moon I’m sure it’ll be fine washing a plate. I wind mine every other day if I’m wearing it. For me it’s a nice personalized connection with my watch…yes and can be annoying at times but I also enjoy it. It’s a watch you won’t regret dropping some money on. Best of luck my friend.

Had one for about 2,5 years.

Likes : it looks kinda cool, you can´t deny that.

Dislikes : the winding was a pain in the *ss....pulling out the crown on this watch is a real pain and the winding itself...well, everything but comfortable.

I sold it eventually, I just grew out of it I guess....a overhyped watch in my opinion, and way too expensive for what you get.

Just my opinion, if you really like it, I would say go for it....there are a lot of happy owners....and it can always be sold again

30m is considered splash resistant generally. 50m is a ton of water (pressure) my friend. Maybe don’t swim with it but rain or dishes should absolutely not be a worry - this is a luxury watch worth several thousand dollars from a major brand. If you ARE concerned about the rain, then I think you have to ask yourself if you’re actually buying a quality product or not.

I’ve had mine for 10 months. My first luxury watch. I actually bought a Seamaster heritage first but traded it back in for a sapphire moonwatch a couple weeks later. I absolutely love everything about it and frequently just sit and stare at it. The 50m water resistance doesn’t bother me at all for every day wear. I just don’t wear it if going to the beach or pool. (Although Omega states you can swim with it).

I had one of the more oddball Speedmasters, a 39 mm automatic triple calendar. It was a very pretty and comfortable. I realized after wearing it for a while that I don’t like Chronographs. They don’t serve any real purpose in my life, and therefore weren’t worth the sacrifice in terms of durability and water resistance. I would start a timer, and then forget it was running. The only thing I ever successfully timed was how long it had been since I started the timer. After two years of minimal wear, I sold it. Now if somebody would make an egg timer chronograph, a countdown timer with an alarm, I would buy one.

I sold my pro Sammy a while ago. Love the watch but the manual winding is too much and the WR sketchy at best. But it’s stunning. And I miss it

I’ve had the Speedmaster Professional with sapphire crystal and caseback for something less than a year. Still my favorite watch so far.

Very classic, goes well in every situation, and the bracelet is a stunner.

Now, if I could get my hands on the new white dial and I could resell mine for a fair price…. Only in that case I might consider partying way for the new white Speedy

Edit: dislikes: none. Really
