My first serious watch was a 36mm Explorer (114270) because back then I thought my 16cm wrist couldn‘t handle anything above that size. After a few months I felt that it‘s a bit too petite for my taste. So I sized up and ended up with a 40mm 16710 which really defined the sweet spot for me.
I‘d still go for a 36mm for special occasions (Suit&Tie events etc.) but for everyday use I‘d say that 38mm is really the smallest I‘d choose.
With solid gold watches I‘d definitely consider a 36mm Day-Date or even a 29mm Santos. It‘s just not that flashy.
For me the obvious choice is Rolex. I know, I know, it‘s kind of boring but everything about this brand and it’s heritage attracts me to it. The Products are simply magnificent, fully usable and gorgeous to look at. Further I like things that have become synonymous with a group of Product e.g. Porsche for Sportscars, Levi‘s for Jeans or Coca Cola for Lemonade that makes you fat. And Rolex is just THE watch brand.
And I don’t want to explain why my watch is great. It‘s a Rolex, so it‘s kind of self explanatory 😉
That white dial GMT really stands out for me. It looks great on the photographs and I‘m excited to see one IRL.
Other than that I‘m quite surprised they put the Jubilee on the Black Bay that’s quite interesting in a „non Rolexy way“ 😄
Well, simply because it‘s discontinued doesn‘t make it a legend immediately in my opinion. Sure, it may rise a bit on the secondary market for some time but other than that it‘s just a watch that was sitting in shelves of ADs before the big Pandemic Hype. When I think about the Milgauss no particular legendary situation or event comes to my mind, instead I think of James May (who‘s got a white dial one). Who is legendary in other ways 😉😂
Don‘t get me wrong, a Milgauss is still an excellent Rolex and I always like to see one in the wild but in terms of legendary status and being somewhat „iconic“ it‘s far away if you put the monetary aspect apart.
Hey, you want the Submariner, believe me. Besides the great looks, the rock solid movement and the versatility it‘s also a Rolex. That means that you don‘t have to explain why it’s cool. Sure, it‘s a bit more expensive and you‘ll get some comments on it, especially at that age (which we actually have in common 😉) but in the end you‘ve got a conversation starter, a safe ticket home from anywhere in the world and a brand image that really no one can beat.
And the best thing is that you don’t have to pretend interest in Space Travel simply because it‘s the only USP of your watch… 😉😂
Of course. I have had the same prejudices about polishing. All the entries in online forums about this topic scared me a bit (was my first time getting a Watch serviced). But after a nice talk with the watchmaker I was so convinced and wasn‘t disappointed.
And in the end every RSC is advised to bring the watch as close as possible back to the original condition. And there‘s nothing wrong with that. And 2 years Guarantee on top is also a reassuring benefit 😉
