What makes you tick about your watch?

So recently I‘ve been talking to a friend of mine who also happens to be a watch enthusiast and we were discussing what small aspect of our watches make us like them. Obvious things like Design and overall looks aside, I kind of came to the conclusion that I like my 16710 in particular because it‘s got the „Rectangular-Dial“. Sure, there are thousands of these but it makes it special to me as this really is MY watch, MY GMT and I haven‘t seen one in the wild ever.

Sometimes it‘s just the small things in life that make it better 😇

My 'thing' mostly is the machinery or in case of my gshocks the functionalities. I enjoy the knowledge of what my wach can do, how does it work ect. Optics is secondary to me

Am I missing something? Rectangular dial? Looks pretty round to me!

Haha, I feel you! I was weirded out the same when I first heard it. It's about the font.

Here's how that comes about: The roman numeral II in the GMT Master II text looks a little different. In OP's case it forms a rectangle (which is amongst the rarest variants) and is therefore called rectangular. There are also stick dials 😀

OP: Really lovely watch (love the faded bezel) but don't tell anyone you like it because of the font 😜

I thought I could use this anonymous safe space here to finally come out as the person I am, a full grown Nerd 😂

But all good, I’m general I tend to avoid talking about my watches with non-Watch people. That‘s just too embarrassing 😂

Hmm. I still kind of don’t get the explanation. I’m an enthusiast and enjoy the history and particulars of a watch but not a nerd. I get the “red” Submariner for instance but not quite getting the “rectangular” dial.

I too have a 16710, do all 16710 have “rectangular” dial? Odd too that the Pepsi bezel fades. I have the “all black” bezel and it hasn’t faded one bit. I’m gonna start calling it the Kiwi GMT. I think I just coined that. 😂

I can totally understand that this is not something that everyone likes. The last Series of the GMT (D-M) usually come either with a „Stick-Dial“ or a “Rectangular-Dial“. These refer to the way that the 2 after GMT Master is printed on the Dial. On most 16710 it‘s the normal Roman Numerals whereas with the Stick Dial looks like this „II“ and the rectangular has shorter Overhangs on the Number so it looks like a rectangle 😉

It’s beauty.

Oh no worries. I mean non-watch people, here you are safe 🤣

Beautiful Coke man! For me, what makes me "tick" the most about my watches is what makes them tick actually. Over the years I've gotten into the movements and mechanics behind my watches a lot more. I love testing accuracy over time and comparing them to one another.

I'm also a HUGE fan of smooth sweep, higher VPH watches. I've almost classed myself out of beat rates below 4 hertz 🤣 Very snobby I know.... I wish I wasn't this way sometimes hahaha

I can't leave well enough alone and try to mod most everything. I have 3 GMT movements and a NH35 coming for new projects.

Sorry, your explanation only confuses me more. There are no Roman Numerals on the "rectangular dial". You said "a little different". Different than what? And what are stick dials and what do they have to do with rectangular dials?

It is about the roman numerals in the GMT Master II text, the "II" (two) to be precise.

That below is a normal one

The next one is like OP's, the "II" forms more of a rectangle and doesn't have serifs that are as pronounced as the above

Image

Finally that last one is a stick dial, because the two "I" have no serifs, ie look like sticks

OK. You Rolex guys get crazy over details most of us wouldn't even notice! 😀
