If you‘re in the market for a Rolex at that age, you don’t want the watch to be from a specific year, you want it to be easily convertible into cash if you need it. So I‘d take a closer look at condition, service history and box/papers. (I‘m born In ‘99 so I‘m quite in the same situation)
The 114270 is a great watch and if you really want it, go for it. But first, do your due diligence on the reference. Become an expert and skip the lazy birthyear excuse, that‘s not intelligent 😉
That two-tone Explorer really got the looks and the aesthetics of a true Rolex Sports watch (Mercedes Hands, Dial etc.) while still managing to pick up the elegance of the classical product line. And it‘s really rare and will be so in the future. I’ve never seen somebody wearing it in the wild. So for me the choice would be easy 😉
I do prefer the 36mm but with the old references (114270,14270). Something about the new 36 is just off for me. I guess it‘s the bracelet and the lugs that are narrower and mess up the proportions for me.
In a Market in which People are willing to spend multiple grands on a piece of engineering that‘s completely overhauled by today‘s digital standards, it‘s hard to argue if one mechanical watch brand is objectively better than the other. To be fair in their purpose of „telling the time“ they get beaten easily by any cheap Quartz watch. In my opinion it all comes down to personal taste as the function of the mechanical watch has become less important than the design and image to most people (including me).
It‘s like discussing the performance of vintage Sports Cars, it mattered back when they were new, nowadays a 930 gets outrun by a Golf GTI or even by one of those ghastly electric T-Cars 😂
I can totally understand that this is not something that everyone likes. The last Series of the GMT (D-M) usually come either with a „Stick-Dial“ or a “Rectangular-Dial“. These refer to the way that the 2 after GMT Master is printed on the Dial. On most 16710 it‘s the normal Roman Numerals whereas with the Stick Dial looks like this „II“ and the rectangular has shorter Overhangs on the Number so it looks like a rectangle 😉
I thought I could use this anonymous safe space here to finally come out as the person I am, a full grown Nerd 😂
But all good, I’m general I tend to avoid talking about my watches with non-Watch people. That‘s just too embarrassing 😂
