I'm not sure about every study, but from this article, 7.5" wrists seem to be on the larger side, which would line up with your "short straps" experience: https://www.bodybuildingmealplan.com/average-wrist-size/
I'd probably start by 3D printing a solid block the same dimensions as the watch and then practice bend various wires until I could make a jig for a "perfected form" if I were going to do more than this.
