Bull Bars on my Casio F91w

Blue paperclip and some duct tape. The tape is wrapped around the sharp ends to keep them together-ish and from poking your wrist. The paperclip was bent into a long U-shape (at about the right width for protecting the watch crystal) and then bent around the watch to essentially clip onto it. This clip went through a few test bends, so you could make one less wobbly.

One could use shrink tubing (with or without the solder) or some spot welding instead for making the ends safer but this seems to work. And the "lack of expense" of a paperclip and some duct tape (which won't be seen when the watch is worn) seems to fit the budget Casio nicely.

I chose blue to fit the color scheme of the F91w and for the extra softness of the rubbery-plastic coating over the paperclip wire.

@MWC2020 might be interested in this nonsense :)

It's not too hard, once you work out the bending pattern. Basically:

  1. Unbend "normal" sized paperclip

  2. Bend clip into long U-shape using watch face to guide width

  3. Bend rounded end of U-shape behind watch first

  4. Bend free ends behind watch

  5. Tighten up a bit to make it wiggle less

  6. Add some duct tape around the two ends (but not on the watch) to hold them closer to each other and to keep them from poking you

  7. Enjoy the audacity of bullbars on an F91w

  8. World domination?

You win. This is the height of horology. I’m calling my Rolex AD to get me off the waitlist right now haha.

Here's a bonus, an F84w (the Japan-Market-Only cousin of the F91w) with hot-pink bullbars we'll call "salmon" because late-80s/early-90s.

Note to self, use a paperclip with a colored rubber sleeve. If you're not worried about tetanus, then you can go the naked route. The rust will also give an individual patina. Kinda like a bronze case. Just saying 🤷

Yeah, that's a route for a nice "aging art" for your paperclip bullbars. I dig it.

I think it's called "exclusive" in the high end horology circles. My shots are up to date. Bring me tetanus!

I have memory of trying something similar but I'm fuzzy on what the material used was. The open ends are indeed a problem, mainly because it just doesn't maintain shape, tension, springiness. This is definitely one of those niche markets ripe for someone to invest the time to perfect their jig at which point they can crank these out to satisfy dozens, maybe hundreds or more!

I'd probably start by 3D printing a solid block the same dimensions as the watch and then practice bend various wires until I could make a jig for a "perfected form" if I were going to do more than this.

Alternatively, I'll replace the tape with heat-gun soldering shrink tubing: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BKSJQC9Q/
