Magnus is the top dog and represents chess unlike any other chess player in history. During interviews he has shared his fears and wants to use his power to bring the necessary changes to the game so cheating becomes less probable.

In the past there have been tournaments where players have pointed out the horribly managed crowd and the lack of tight security. Chess players face insane pressure to perform and the game is all about brain staying focused. Distractions or interruptions in the thought flow are poison to a beautiful game. Qatar masters is plagued with these problems like ringing smart phones in crowd roaming in playing halls just a few feet away from players.

I think Magnus didn’t want to point out the issues from the get-go. Not just paranoia I think it’s also his enormous ego - could not handle losing to a 2500 and the timing of his response got qualified as an excuse. Magnus has quit a tournament in the past (Sinquefield Cup 2022) after his defeat to Hans again due to lack of cheating precautions.

Unlike other sport there are no known drugs to boost your performance during matches but there have been players caught for finding ways to cheat. Georgian GM Gaioz was banned for it and an over 2600 rated French GM Sebastian Feller. American GM Hans Neimann admitted he had cheated during online chess event. Chess.com bans thousands of accounts every year for cheating during online games using proven methods relying on statistics and probability.

Technology is growing smaller and more sophisticated bio-chips integrated with sensors and nail sized super computer engines to match a Stockfish or Leela chess engine which are rated almost 3500. You see, it is all in the realm of possibility.

Sometimes I feel bad for professional chess players, because there is bare minimum return on their investment of time and resources to become title holder like NMs, FMs, IMs, GMs unless you end up becoming Super GM. The title level games have so many nuances and ofc that shouldn’t justify gambling your morals…

So these are all my reasons for supporting Cagnus Marlson in pursuing tournament organizers to acknowledge their poor management; use tech to fight tech and manage the crowd better in future.

Firstly hats off to the young Kazak GM Alisher Suleymanov for instilling belief in the 2500 rated players that they can bring down giants like Magnus.

After pausing on perfect frames; zooming in; changing saturation; sharpness; shadows etc. I would like share those frames and the conclusions I drew.

- Day+Date window at 3oclock

- No hour numerals, not even at 12

- Dark blue or black indices and hands

- White/Pearl like dial on the dress watch

- Less than or equal to 13mm height

- Watch has brand Text, mostly likely not a logo under 12 and it has some description above 6.

Possible candidates brands:

- Breitling

- Vostok Europe

- Design of the watch matches a Seiko 5 series but the crown isn’t offset.

I wish one of the interviewers just asked this basic question to Ali. Would have saved us from conducting this investigation😅

PS: professional chess players don’t earn much. There are very few chess tournaments held across the world which pay decent. I doubt he is wearing something over $1000.
