Department Store Watches

I love watches and always have. But it took me until I was retired to be able to afford them and devote time to them (Reciprocity!) Now I have 30. Only one out of the thirty was bought in an actual store. How many watches would any of us have if it wasn't for the Internet, where almost Every Watch In The World is available to us? How many watches in your collection were bought at any kind of bricks and mortar store?

Yes like you, nearly all bought off the Internet. And a far few are vintage and a lot more are used (someone else takes the depreciation hit) plus where I live there's not a lot of shops. Damned online, bigger collection smaller wallet.

Two out of the six I own came from a store. My pocket watch pre-dates the internet and my Ellesse was from a shop in Aberdeen, bought as a belated birthday gift many years ago. Sad to say but the web allows us unlimited choice from the comfort of home.

I own 2 watches from a store (with one of those stores being an antique centre), and 1 from a car-boot sale, the rest were online

Three, all from big box stores: Timex Easy Reader (~$35), Casio F-91W (~$15), and the Walmart pocket watch ($8.88). I guess I'd also have the eight indirectly inherited watches (five pocket, three wrist) that have been found dead in drawers in the Klosoff mansion in the last few years? All (being) repaired locally! In total, that would be a majority, although I didn't really choose all.

Thanks for your reply. I'm guessing you're the exception, but we'll see.

Walmart pocket watch??!!!! $8.88???!!!!! Where can I get one of those?? Oh - never mind. I've got to get over to Walmart! That's the only watch I'll ever need! I don't care if it's not a strap monster. And right now I have 30 watches. I'm always hearing these Horological Big Shots saying that affordable watches have no resale value, but I'll bet if I sold my whole collection of 30 to buy the $8.88 Walmart pocket watch, I could raise at least $7.75. I'd ask you to post a photo of it but I'm afraid it would cause a WatchCrunch and Walmart panic.

That was two or three years ago. Inflation has brought it up to $12.18.💸

Should you actually get it, ask how to tighten up the hinged cover or shorten the chain.

All my pieces are store/boutique bought. I guess I really havent caught on the e-commerce train yet..

$12.18?? These dumb politicians and the Central Bank have ruined everything with their phony inflation. But I won't be deterred. It's worth $12.18. It's worth any price to be able to pull out my genuine Walmart pocket watch at an Ambassador's Reception or a Coronation to give someone the correct time. Thank you for the link. But GEORGE is not just a Walmart sub-brand, is it? I want the real thing. Not even these watch gurus know that W. A. L'Mart invented the original pocket watch back in 1541. Also, thanks for the advice about the cover and chain. I'll bet the purple-haired chick in the Walmart Fine Jewelry Department knows how to do it.

Seriously, or at least as seriously as we should take any of this stuff, thanks so much. But I really am going to look for one of these. Talk about a Grail . . .

" . . . unlimited choice from the comfort of home."

I hope that's not our epitaph.

Thank you for your reply. I see you bought one watch from a car-boot sale. Were they selling fine distinguished brands like Rolexx, Ommega, and Patekk Phileep?

Good for you. Maybe you aren't missing a lot. And your way encourages financial common sense.

Bought two G-Shocks at Walmart in person. Bought a Seiko Prospex online but at Macy’s if that counts.
