Thanks for replying mate!
at first I leaned more towards the speedmaster, always wanted one, love Omega as a brand, but over the past few months I started to love more and more the Santos, the way its sporty and elegant at the same time really appeals to me and now I am leaning more towards the santos

The first watch I really fall in love with was an explorer, but in the past months I "got over it", still think its an amazing watch but in the current state of Rolex and with alternatives like the Santos that appeals to the same type of people, I don't see myself buying it any time soon.
I would argue that a Cartier Santos and an Omega Speedmaster would make a killer 2 watch collection, add a Sinn U50 as a beater and thats an even better 3 watch collection in my opinion

I'd go with the Cartier over the Speedy.  Before you pop on the Speedy, I'd make sure that you REALLY want to deal with a hand-winder.  I've been wearing my first hand-wound piece since Hanukkah started, and there is a certain level of anxiety that goes with it for me...is the power winding down, have I overwound the mainspring, is it going to snap, etc.  These are all things that I don't typically worry myself about with an auto on the wrist.

Thanks for replying and I see where you come from but honestly I've been wearing a manual vostok and it doens't really bother me, kind of added the winding to my "morning routine" and I don't hate it (actually I like it), I do lean more in the way of the santos but for other reasons :)

Cheers

I never knew that hand winding mechanical watches induced so much anxiety.

Wake up, wind 20-25 times, check watch against cell phone, adjust if necessary, wear. Next day: repeat.

My recommendation is a white or cream dial, which is less important. It should be something that you might wear on a job interview, sales call, or a date.

Eh...I could just be weird.  My wife tells me as much on the regular.  I keep asking her what that means for her since she said "yes."

That said, I don't have these concerns with my autos.  I grab them off of the winder and go.

I have more anxiety with my automatics. I don't use winders with the thinking that watches at rest don't wear out as quickly. I check my automatics more often during the day, especially until they have been worn a few hours. I wind them less (and vintage Seiko not at all).

I knew there is a concern with older watch, overwinding them is possible and can cause some damage, but newer watches that have manual calibres are quite good and safe to use.

regarding the speedmaster, I wouldn't want it with an automatic movement, I think it will hurt its personality and heritage, but that's just my opinion, in any case the manual movement isn't whats stopping me from buying it :)

do you recommend using winders? for some reason they induce more anxiety than a manual wind movements for me

With the sheer number of jewels in most of my automatic movements, friction isn't really a huge issue, so wearing them out isn't a massive concern.

I've never had an issue -- I keep the watches on a reasonable amount of TPD and I've found it to be fine.

which winder are you using? I've heard good stuff about the winders made by Wolf

Actually my WOLF winder has given me more grief than its worth.  And lets just say that WOLF's customer service leaves a LOT to be desired.  I will not be buying another WOLF product -- ever.  Instead, I'd actually recommend one of the less expensive ones off of Amazon with Mabuchi motors.  I bought one on Prime Day and have been thrilled with it so far.

·

thats interesting, I guess I wouldn't be buying from Wolf and will have a look at Amazon, thanks for letting me know 👍

·

Oh no!  The Sinn dive bezel is broken. The triangle is supposed to be at the 12.

·

I have three watches in my three year plan. Two of them are the Speedmaster and Santos.

I tried both of them on and will almost certainly be purchasing the Speedmaster this spring. I really loved it on wrist. I loved the display case back movement, and I love the coaxial escapement.

The Santos I tried on was only available in large. Tried on the blue dial/blue bezel and the white dial steel bezel. I didn’t fall in love. I need to try on the medium. If the medium doesn’t speak to me on wrist, I will have to scratch it and move on to something else.

One consideration is that I don’t own a chronograph. I see you do, so your collection may do better with the Santos. I recommend trying it on.

·

I tried the santos with the white face and bracelet (stainless steel, medium size) in Dubai about a month ago, it was great, fits me perfectly and thats what make me lean over the santos' direction.
also its amusing how the reasons you love the speedmaster for are exactly the same as mine, the co-axial escapement is brilliant, the movement looks great, fits great on my wrist and I also love the history and design (obviously)

Also my chronograph is mecaquartz, I love it, its a great watch, but it doesn't really fills the box of the speedmaster :/

cheers

I have both, and would have an extremely tough time choosing between them. They are totally different watches, so they each appeal to me for different reasons. Both have great stories behind them, and both are somewhat iconic watches.  I feel that the Speedy with the co-axial movement is probably the "better" watch, and I love being able to view the movement through the exhibition case back.  It's also a super legible watch due to the contrast between the hands and the dial, whereas the curved case of the Santos can sometimes result in reflections that hamper visibility. The bracelet on the Speedy is much more comfortable than that of the Santos, although the way that the Cartier hugs the wrist makes it quite comfortable as well. The quick change strap system on the Cartier is really nice though, and the rubber strap is very comfortable.  There are some days when I look into my watch box to decide what to wear for the day when the Santos just screams out to be worn, and on those days, nothing else will do.  I think that overall, if I could only keep one, I'd probably keep the Santos, simply due to the fact that I love the aesthetics. Best of luck in your decision making - I don't think you would regret either purchase.

I'd have to go Santos because of size, the Speedy is just a bit big and that sucks😢

Cartier.  This is the way.

I would always go with the Speedmaster. Why? It's one of my favorite watches ever I received one for my 21st birthday (way back in 1972), unfortunately, lost it in the river. It's beautiful, rugged, has the best history of any watch. Plus, I'm an Onega fanboy, I own 6, from '50s to brand new this year.

Thank you for replying, you watches look brilliant, what pulls me in the santos’ direction is the aesthetic of the watch which is unlike anything else in the market, so I think I’ll end up going with it, but some day I’ll also get the speedmaster, both amazing watches, also I would like to see your collection if it’s possible :)

I've been intending to get a single shot of all my watches. I'll be doing that soon.

Thanks for the kind words.  I agree with your priority on these - the Santos is simply more unique, and more aesthetically appealing (at least to me).

Are you planning on the Large or Medium model? FWIW, my wrists are 17cm, and I feel that the Large wears perfectly well on me, even though popular opinion seems to suggest that watches like the Santos and Tank should be worn a bit smaller.  The Medium is only available with the white dial, which is a bit unfortunate considering how many awesome variants are available in the Large. I had initially wanted the blue dial version, but  I opted for the SS version with black ADLC bezel (WSSA0037) based on the fact that I had concerns about the SS bezel being a scratch magnet. Plus, after seeing the WSSA0037 in person, I fell in love with it (it didn't really appeal to me anywhere near as much in photos).

I plan on getting the white dial, stainless steel, medium sized, on a bracelet santos
it fits me perfectly imo
