What is a moonphase complication to you?

I don't have a moonphase watch (yet) in my collection. I am just wondering for those who do, what does this complication do for you? Is there some utility to it or is it just for the looks?

I voted B because Lycanthropy can be a very serious issue if not dealt with on time.

One day you are sleeping peacefully at home and the next you are awaken in the middle of the night by ungodly howling and find that half the neighborhood is busy loping around on all four, growling at passerby and leaving a mess after them. Oh yes, and expect to see a lot of nudity when they all wake up at dawn in the park.

Not to mention that if you are a girl, you'll find a filming crew following you everywhere in the hope they'll catch you being eaten if you go alone after working hours to an underground car park.

This can get very annoying and lower your property value.

E: I’m a night landscape photographer and the moonphase determines when to go out and what to shoot.

Stars and the Milky Way are more visible during a new moon, and full moons and Blood moons are more fun to align with a landscape composition.

But also D. Man a moonphase complication really dresses up a watch.

I was kinda hoping some one would bring up this terrible problem. 🤣 I salute you my friend from saving humanity from the lycan menace! 🤣

Now, there is a very valid purpose for a moonphase complication! 👊 I would never have thought of E. It makes perfect sense my friend. Those are great shots of the night landscape! 💯

Gotta say there is nothing worse than a lack of bracelet microadjust when going through a warewolf transformation

I would love to see a werewolf sporting a Patek! 😂

Imo, the moonphase complication ranks up there as one of the most useless on a watch dial but always had a cool factor. Took me a while to find the right one&done for my collection, until Farer released theirs and I knew right away the search was over! 🤙

I agree, not for anything else but it's the cool factor for me too. That's a great looking piece! Farer really have their thing for making good-looking dials and color combinations. 🎯

Thank you! Agreed - Farer consistently nails the color schemes at terrific value! 🤙

Nice moonphase! Just as I thought so. Either it is romantic, dresses up the dial, cool factor, etc. All for the looks mostly. 👌

·

I agree! Great moonphase pieces you got there my friend! Love it! ❤

I love the gold moon when it’s shining 😜😜😜

Wow! That is some heavy moonphase rendition my friend! Great piece, congratulations! 🍻

Guys, ever wondered why some enthusiasts hate the power reserve in some GS SD variants but don't mind or would rather have a moonphase? 🤔🤔🤔

·

The fella who manages the Breitling service centre here in Toronto brought out my Navitimer 4 year annual calendar with Moonphase after it was serviced in Switzerland, chatted a little said that he never saw the logic for a Moonphase function since he is not a farmer, haha. The guy is wearing a Navitimer Rattrapante watch which to me might be even more useless but at least he can service the complication himself. An inexpensive quartz watch will tell the time nicely, the other stuff is adornment, makes our lives a bit more interesting.

Good point. Even with our shared passion for timepieces, we all have different tastes and preferences. Some enthusiasts would argue, less is more. I personally find the date complication very useful. Anything aside from that is gravy, but hopefully not to overcrowd the dial thereby making it look too busy/incomprehensible. I got to take care of my old eyes too you know. 😜

I have to admit that after all these years collecting timepieces, my preferences remain constant, that somewhat complicated movements such as triple calendars, annual calendars, perpetual and a simple Moonphase makes the watch an object of my desire.

Cheers,

Jerry

That's all good my friend! Crunch on! 👊

Just warms my heart that the werewolf option was #2, bless this community of ours 🥰

·

Can you imagine if it were #1? That's a lot of silver bullets within the community. 😜

A watch is, in general, a cool-looking but functionally almost-useless thing that nominally serves a practical purpose, but this nod to practicality is understood by everyone involved to be entirely symbolic, a fragile fig leaf. Of all the possible complications, then, the moonphase is the one that most perfectly mirrors the watch itself in microcosm. It is cool-looking, functionally almost-useless, and nominally serves a purpose which is nonetheless obviously merely symbolic and nothing more.

·

I don't get the moonphaae complication, or like it very much. There are a few watches I would tolerate it on, maybe, but I have zero desire for one.

·

Yep photopills is my main tool for phases, set/rise times and alignments. The moonphase on my G-Shock does remind me that I should probably go out shooting whenever approaching a summer new moon though.

It has always been said, a watch nowadays is really just an unnecessary jewelry. With all the high tech gadgets which could tell the time more accurately than the top of the line COSC, METAS and Superlative Chronometers out there. Who doesn't own a cellular phone these days? So why not just slap-in another complication to further enhance the look of an otherwise unncessary jewelry, right? Does makes perfect sense if we think of it that way. 😊

I practically share the same sentiment initially. But through this poll I somewhat get it now. It is just another complication of watch collecting itself. Our difference in preferences as enthusiasts once again comes to the fore of this hobby. 😉

Thank you for your input. I too worry about the lack of fellow concerned beings on this growing danger. I see that looking pretty is the number one choice. How superficial! Won't someone please think of the children??

Judging by the werewolves choice at #2 in the polls, it proves to be a worthy choice as @Catskinner would have it. 😂

Exactly. I probably will never own anything with a moonphase, but I don't judge against people for having them.
