Trying something new

Since the release of the new Grand Seiko SBGX355 Quartz Snowflake, it's peaked my interest in trying to pull off a smaller-diameter case. So I decided it would be wise to purchase something inexpensive with identical case specs. After searching the internet and watching a few old YouTube reviews, I decided on the Seiko Essentials SUR361. I found one on Amazon that was listed by Jomashop, and after my Amazon Prime bucks, it only cost me $82.

Specs

Caliber: 6N43

Case Diameter: 37.5mm

Thickness: 9.2mm

Lug to lug: 44.5mm

Lug width: 20mm

*Almost spot on except with a better lug width of

20mm*

Upon opening the box, I could definitely see the difference in size compared to my preferred case size of 40mm. On the wrist, it actually feels pretty good; the thinness is definitely something new for me, and I actually like it. I can only imagine what the Grand Seiko SBGX355 would feel like considering it has a titanium case and bracelet vs the stainless steel construction of the SUR361, this already feels like I'm not wearing anything on the wrist.

Unfortunately, I just don't think I'll be able to pull this off. The dial just seems freakishly small. When comparing it to my Seiko Presage SPB165, even though it's only 39.3mm in diameter, the dial has a larger presence.

This last pic is on one of my employees 6.4 wrist and looks great on him.

Let me know what you think?

Thanks

it's funny how watch sizing preferences are different. I'd say the Presage looks ginormous and misproportioned and the essentials watch is the correct size for your wrist, and that your employee ought to go even smaller to e.g. 34mm.

but that's why such things are preferences. Wear what you like

I had always been a 40-42mm guy. Collected that way for years. I got a 39mm Christopher Ward Sealander and really liked the smaller size after wearing it for a bit. I kept trying 39mm and 37mm. I just got my first 36mm watch today and honestly I love it. I couldn't imagine strapping one of my old 42's on anymore. I would say give it a bit and see if it grows on you!

This melts my heart. What a gorgeous peice.

SUR361 looks to fit much better in my opinion, maybe the quality of the Presage is making you biased. You should definitely buy the Grand Seiko to be sure this is not the case 😂

While I prefer 40mm and above this watch looks great and should perform well to, for the price I would rock it for sure

I have the Grand Seiko SBGX in 37mm, the Seiko 5 SNXA11 in 37.5mm, the SARB035 in 38mm and the Presage in green 39mm. I can wear from 36mm to 39mm from around 42-43 to 47-48mm lug to lug on my 17.5cm wrist. I think as long as everything is in a certain range, it is totally ok. Both watches have their room, both do not look too small or too big. Keep them both. I believe we have similar wrist sizes? Plus the comparison of a smaller black dial watch with a bigger white dial watch will always visually change your perception. The black will look couple of units smaller and the white dial vice versa. Thank you by the way now I will check this black dial Seiko SUR as well :)

Love that GEC 79? Got a 44 in my pocket today and a 79 in my desk. Watch is beautiful as well.
