I had a Montblanc annual calendar which was relatively affordable; their Vasco de Gama perpetual calendar is one of the most attainable. I liked it, but it did have a build quality that was less luxurious than other grail brands. It felt too light and the rotor was a bit tinny/noisy. The only reason I didn't keep it was because annual/perpetual calendars are a b!tch to wind and reset. I currently have a quartz annual calander which I am happy with, for the fun and functionality.
I think if I had a perpetual calendar watch, it would be on a watch winder. And "wearing out" that watch for the sake of timekeeping would be another part of the cost/value proposition of owning one.
How deep are they into watch appreciation?
If they're a novice, a simple Seiko Essentials gold-plated tank-style watch would be dressy to wear on special occassions.
If they're a collector, a Longines Dolce Vita would be glamorous.
