Patience pays off!
It’s been long awaited but I’ve finally got an offer from the AD (to try on only, and get on the waiting list) How long are people expecting to wait?

That’s funny and sad in equal measure. If my AD invited me to just try on only, I’d tell him to F off. But if you’ve never had one on then I guess it helps you to know if it’s something you’ll actually still want.
The answer to your question varies hugely depending on a multitude of factors.
Have you got any purchase history with the AD? Have you bought any Rolexes with this AD? If the answer to both is no, you could be waiting indefinitely. If the answer to both is yes, you could be waiting a few months.
If you've bought a shit ton of stuff from them, they'd have just sold you the watch and not invited you to try it on.

I don't think it will be too long before we have to go through a mortgage application type of vetting process before we get to try one on, and then get an invite to join the list before eventually getting the call as we hit retirement and our disposable income has dried up.. 🤦

My AD invited me to try it on so that I could be put on a waiting list for the waiting list.
Politely inform them that they are now on your waiting list. Your long waiting list. Your really long waiting list.
