Thoughts on subscriptions?

Since getting into the world of watches, I've gotten ads for Watch gang and the like. A subscription sort of like the bespoke box or battle box, where they send you a watch every month or so. What do y'all think about this? Feel free to DM or comment your opinions as well!

@nomad11c I made a post on this asking the same when I first got on this app. Please go and read the comments that were posted. It really made me fall in love with microbrands even more. I quickly canceled my subscription and realized I’ll never wear the watches I got from WG.

A coworker has a subscription. Some of the watches he likes, some he doesn't. Some are decent looking...others are, uh, most decidedly not. None are especially well finished or particularly well made from what I've seen. Almost all are way bigger/thicker than a quartz watch needs to be.

Really fail to see why anyone would even think about it tbh.

Send some random company money every month and get sent a cheap watch that you've not chosen 🤯

Send me cash instead if you're that desperate to throw it away 🤣🤣🤣

I was a member of Watch Gang & Loot Crate for a minute and what they both have in common is that they are essentially blind grab bags of slow to move (read: not popular) merchandise. You get more misses than hits, IMO.

I'm not happy I did them, but I'm not angry I did them either.

I ended them when I realized I wanted more control over what I wanted to buy.

Funnily enough,I'm in the UK Watch gang Facebook group, dunno how I ended up on there but seems to be mostly folks trying to fob off the shite they got but don't want - that's what my opinion is based on.

To be fair they're a decent bunch & I've done quite a few trades/swaps on there.

Do some research, find some watches you really want and buy those. You'll love those 1000 percent more than some random watches that someone sends to you.

An ex-friend of mine did this and he thought he was getting a deal. When he showed me the watches from brands I never heard of, I did my research and the watches weren't even close to what he was paying. It seemed like they were internet brands that had no real value other than hype marketing to make them seem like they were a storied brand with history, but they were not. I also noticed most of them were large watches which reminded me of Invicta and a lot of skeletonized models. He loved them because he is the type of guy that thinks bigger is better and also loved his Invicta's. He looked down on my Timex collection, so that pretty sums up my ex-friend. In New York the younger folks would call him a douche. lol

I've heard about one with colourful socks. That one I would consider. Maybe.

·

I don’t personally see the point. If I like a watch and can afford it, I buy it. I don’t want someone else picking watches for me. I need to be the one to choose.

·

Why does this remind me of the old Columbia and BMG music clubs? Sounds like a similar thing.

·

The wheel from watch gang can be worth it if you are picky and research the watches you pick. Just remember you are most likely to get a tier 1 watch so make sure you like it.

·

Go for it. Surely there is really a company with a successful business model whereby they send out watches worth FAR more than the money you pay monthly, or for a spin.

They wouldn't BS or scam you by sending out $50 Chinese mushroom brands that they build up a BS backstory for with inflated MSRPs.

Also, the people hawking junk on TeeVee shopping channels are your trusted, close friends who really care about you and want you to have luxury goods at a bargain price but only if you call NOW as supplies are limited.
