To be honest i just buy whatever i Like and dont care if its hyped or not

Eh, I buy what I like, if they happen to be hype, niche, unheralded, passe, iconic or whatever. But, if you are asking if I buy because influencers or popular opinion pushes a watch, no.

Buy what I want. Two turds if it is hyped or not. EDIT, wait are we saying the NG is a hyped watch? Marketing does not equal hype.

Loaded poll haha. Buying a hyped watch can also mean that you are buying an amazing timepiece. I like amazing timepieces regardless of hype or not. It’s not unfortunate 😁😉👍 Buy what speaks to you!

Problem is I really do like a particular Hype watch - the CasiOak.

If you buy what you love, the hype is nothing but meaningless noise.

I’m gonna vote no. I just got a Speedy in Sept last year, and added a Tudor BB58 just 3 weeks ago. The heart wants to vote yes, but my wallet is giving a firm no for this year 🥲

This Casio is my hype purchase. Saw it as the last one left in a shop and I bought it at retail price. It was too much for it, even at that price (50EUR). The quality is much cheaper than that. Happily, I managed to sell it for the same price and regain my sanity.

Absolutely not

Maybe a couple of years after the hype has died if it's a genuinely good piece

I think the best parts of hypewatchdom are the following.

  1. There is often a very good reason why the watch is hyped. By and large, the hype watch has earned some of that hype.

  2. There's always an inevitable glut in supplies after the initial price gouging because people don't actually want to own them for their own intrinsic merits.

Remember the blue BB58 and how it was going above retail price ($4500-$6000 for new ones at grey marketers) in early 2022?

It's not any worse a watch today than it was back then.

What is different is the price. $2800 generously for a good quality pre owned one and $3200 for a New in box one. I wager you could walk into an AD and ask for a 20% discount today relatively easily.

So I love hype watches! People should hype more watches! Because patience ends up getting rewarded if you can avoid the initial stupidity.

Please define "hyped" watches for this old fart.

I know the obvious like the plastic swatch Omega and Blancpain but I never really considered the Casioak to be anything other than another G-Shock, just a new style. They've never been hard to get.

I don’t actually know what watches I’m going to buy this year yet. I do enjoy the post hype depreciation (what the fuck happened with the bb58 blue lol) and the affordability it brings. I will say that looking at the way things are going, I could see myself buying a couple of watches this year.

·

I’m strong enough to resist and understand the marketing manipulation however I’m equally weak enough to understand that if someone put something remotely cool under my nose I might just buy it

Look, SOMETIMES there is a reason watches are hyped. And maybe that leaves a bad taste in your mouth for a while . . . you don't want to be part of the pack. Some people like to be different etc. But sometimes, at the end of the day, you have to recognize when watch hype is there (albeit maybe overblown) b/c the watch is just good.
