Date window is overrated

For context, every one of my watches at the moment has a date window. Half of them also have a day window too as part of it. I find the feature useful, but I really want to own a nice automatic watch with no date window! It’s a headache sometimes when I put on a watch to find that it’s in the middle of the changing cycle, so I have to wait at least an hour or two before I can set the time right. Plus, I don’t always want my 3 o’clock to say something else! Sometimes I want to see a 3, or see the 3 hour marker. Again, maybe it’s just me 🤷‍♂️

You don't have to wait to set the time, even if it's in the middle of a date change. Just pull out the stem to the second click and set the time.

What most manufacturers don't want you to do is change the date during a date change, generally between 8:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. to be on the safe side.

Yeah that’s what I meant

It’s not just you. I agree… I made a post maybe a week ago about that, there are interesting comments there. If you want, go check it out.

I like no date because of design reasons, paradoxically, all the watches I own have a date window. So my actions don’t go together with my thoughts.

Absolutely hate date complications, I've a reasonable memory!!

Pet hate is dates on diver's, utterly ridiculous.

I do have watches with that awful carbuncle, but small enough to be ignored. (eg Willard)

·

I have a few watches with no date. I love them. I rarely ever set the date on my watches anyway because I don’t ever look at that part of the watch. For me at least, it’s a useless function that often ruins the symmetry of the dial. YMMV

·

I am not a fan of date windows, generally.

My most recent acquisition is a Hamilton Khaki Field with no date. I just love the clean face!

·

I think you have not quite mastered how to do the date change. You can immediately adjust the time, to put it outside the dangerous interval. Then you use your quickset date to the day before today. Then you adjust time, making the date flip over too in the process. This way you can make sure that you are in the right 12h window.

Oh wow, see that I didn’t know! I thought you weren’t supposed to pull the crown out at all when it’s changing dates

There are plenty of dateless watches out there. Field watch? Hamilton KFM or Murph (and similar)

Mountaineering watch? Rolex Explorer and similar

Pilot watch? Most of them are dateless!

Diver? A lot of microbrands do dateless.

Dress watch: Too many to name

·

By the way, some designs have both a date window and the corresponding hour number next to it. It's usually a 3. Sadly, it's not as good looking.

My Timex Weekender Chronograph has a date at 4 and also the 4, luckily the dial is so busy it doesn't stick out.

·

I much prefer no date watches.

What is carbuncle? I personally find it useful sometimes, but looks-wise I prefer without I think.

So my criteria for having a watch was: a date window, 50m water resistance, automatic. So all of my watches then, except for a vintage Patek I was given, had dates. And yes, restarting them and setting the date was kind of annoying. Then I bought a very nice watch that didn't have a date window. It was copying the Tudor and Rolex--and every frickin' micro--thing about no date window.

The problem, of course, was that I kept looking at it for the date, whereupon I would have to dig out my phone to check the date. I still like and wear the watch, but I won't buy another one without a date.

Your mileage may vary 😁😉

Date windows are quickly becoming a deal breaker! No more. Cyclops on date is horrific, I had one and removed the cyclops, watch looks better.

·

To quote a fellow Cruncher . . "No-dates are for cosplay . . ." I don't know what that means. Date windows generally are not done well and I even when integrated into the design are either too small to read, or capped with a magnifying monocle that forced the crystal to be flat, gets caught on things, breaks the overall design and finally, just looks ugly. If your need is for a date complication for the watches' intended use, and serves your purposes then by all means choose to wears a watch with one. I can't remember a time where I forgot the date or day of the week and then felt lucky I was wearing a watch that gave me that information. If I forget the day or date then I intended to do so, like on Holiday. Watch makers, just find a better way to include it in the design, not just plop a tiny rectangle at the 3 and call it good. Some manufacturers and designers are better at placement and integration than others but I do suggest always offering a date and no-date version.

Date window is mandatory for a watch to go on my wrist Monday thru Friday. Dateless watches are reserved for evenings and weekends

·

Date is a must. Cyclops I will never be a fan of

·

I love a date well designed. But i cannot accept cheap date designs. A white date disc on a coloured dial whith fonts that fight esthetically whith the fonts used for hours, micro date windows used in 45 mm cases...

·

I love my date windows. This is a Sinn and it’s only in German.(Donnerstag=Thursday) I know Seiko’s I’ve seen have the day in two different languages. Can always change them up to break the monotony of the same day showing.

Problem is that you have too many watches! <——- said no one ever! I forget the date all the time. I don’t think I’ll own a watch without one. Joking aside….if I had a bunch of automatics I could see how this would be a drag!

·

Yes i love date window an also the ciclops for me the second best complication behind the Chrono

·

I like big dates and I cannot lie...

·

I would usually go for a no-date watch over a date watch if I have the choice, however, I do find myself needing to know the date more often than I thought.

That being said, my collection is two no-date and two date watches and the dates are at 6 o'clock (if a date, then 6 o'clock please)

I like date windows when done well- one less reason to take out my phone 😊I like the Formex date window beveled at 6, for example.

Bang on - the Essence has probably the most well-executed date window on any watch, full stop. I hardly notice it unless I'm looking for it specifically.

Based on this thread though, I'd say date windows are "fairly rated " rather than overrated (I.e., the conversation seems pretty balanced between those who like and those who do not like the complication). Personally I like having a date, it's arguably been more useful than a timing bezel, and I don't find their presence on most dials too intrusive; although I'm not sure how i feel about cyclops lenses...

Yeah I get that. I know some people don’t need to have the date as they’re able to remember it, but I do need reminding sometimes and it does come in handy. But, it does take up space in the watch, especially the day/date ones like on Seilo 5 models.
