MY GRANDPA’S WATCH

This is my grandfathe‘a 1940s Del Bana. It is a mechanical Chronograph with a tachymeter on the face and a flyback complication. This watch once belonged to my grandfather which was then passed on to my father and now to me. This watch had been tucked away in a cabinet full of antiques that I have at home. In it are my grandpa‘s pipes, medals my father won in Argentina as a cyclist, and other knickknacks like that. The watch had not seen the day of light since I was in elementary school when I took it to school for extra credit points, my mom took it home as soon as the teacher saw it and gave me my points. This watch is incredible for how old it is! it still runs and keep very accurate time. I’ve noticed it adds about 2-3 seconds a day. I think that’s pretty impressive for never being serviced. The seconds hand does not completely flyback to zero but rather to the two second marker. I figured I’d start the seconds hand no stop it when it it’s zero and leave it like that. This watch is very special to me not only because it belonged to my grandfather but because it connects me to him in a way I never was able to. My grandfather passed away shortly after I was born and I was never able to meet him. My father, his mother, and two sisters all say I remind them of him. That we share similar personality traits, mannerisms, and even how we like our food. This things alone make me feel very happy but having his watch that he constantly wore on my wrist really connects me with the old man. When I wore it out the first time, the face was dark and looked stained. After about an hour it started clearing up and becoming whiter and I was able to see the numbers and all the little details, I like to think that my grandpa was at work cleaning it and making it look better. although the dial is not in perfect conditions, I love the look of it and think it adds to the look of it.  I love this watch so much and although it doesn’t get as much wrist time as it deserves, it is my most valuable piece in my collection and the watch I truly enjoy wearing the most.

Something to be said about a hand made item without the use of computers and such, in a by-gone era.  Here's less worn version of the watch for your reference and what your grandpa might have seen in its earlier days. (hands have been replaced)

Some watches are worth a full restoration. I believe that you have such a watch.

Truly a beautiful watch!! Is it stainless steel or silver? mine happens to be bronze so it’s gotten a nice color to it over time. What a beautiful face, very classic and timeless. It reminds me a lot of a Patek or the newer Tissot Chronograps.
