Seiko SPB317-Hiking And Exploring Mountain Streams

Image

I just got back from a wonderful weekend hiking trip with my family as well as my cousin and his family. Wore the SPB317 the whole time and even did some swimming/exploring in some mountain streams. Freezing cold water, but it feels absolutely incredible. Cold water therapy is legit!

Feel free to share your own adventure photos with your watches! My cousin (featured in the photos below) wore his Solar G-shock. I'm slowing converting him into a watch geek (or at least that's my goal). 😉

From my recent shark fishing trip, Shackleford Banks, North Carolina, USA. Will be going again in less than a month!

With my Timex Tide/Temp/Compass watch:

And with these, I'm wearing my Casio 158:

And what happens when you hook into one that's too big for your gear!

You can see the WTF just happened look on my face, lol!

Nice! Love to see it (minus the broken rod)! Our little hiking trip was in Brevard, NC. 😎

Hell yeah. Looks like a beautiful hike and swim. Get out there and put your watch through it’s paces! These guys who take their submariners off to swim in the hotel pool are a joke. The safest place for that watch isn’t in your backpack—it’s on your wrist!

That's why I love tool watches! I want something on my wrist that's appropriate for swimming around in mountain streams. Even when I'm not actively doing those things, I love having that type of watch on my wrist. 😀

Such a nice watch, I love the SPB317. My most recent adventure was hiking 2,000 meters up in the Italian Alps (Cortina d'Ampezzo) in early May. It was very cold and very wet so let's just say that the 100m WR on my Hamilton Khaki Auto 38mm gave me peace of mind.

Man, that looks killer! LOVE seeing field watches in their element like that! 😍

Right on! Been adventuring with the #doxa 300t Cussler in the cold waters here in Washington state. Off on another dive tomorrow with it. 🤙🏼

Heck yeah! Doxa in the water is killer!

Freezing water sounds heavenly as I bake in 107 F temps. My outdoor activities are limited to running from the front door to the grass so my dog can do his duties and back again.

That’s a great looking Seiko! I’m up in the air between this one and the SPB187 I currently wear. Any thoughts on the two compared?

Oh, wow! I owned the 187 for a while and it's awesome! I even did a review on it here on the site. Two completely different watches though. The 317 has a totally different case design that amounts to being more simple and more subdued as it's all brushed. The 187 is basically the opposite with the more dynamic MM300 style case. Much more visually "interesting" compared to the more "simple" 317. Then of course you have blue vs black dial. I think it would make perfect sense to have both within a collection. 187 has the more colorful dial with an overall more interesting/blingy case. 317 is a more simple, subdued toolish/utilitarian watch by design. Two different watches for two different moods. 😀

Thanks man! That helps. I have a purposefully small collection. I like my watches to be used (not collected!). Right now, I’ve got a Damasko DS30 that serves as my utilitarian workhouse. It’s a great watch, but I’m so drawn to the 317.

As far as Seikos go, the MM300/200 case design is my favorite. So, I like your idea of having both ;)

No problem! Like I said, both make so much sense in a collection, but like you I have a VERY small collection (only two watches at the moment). If I had to choose one between the two (which I have), I would go with the 317 simply because I want that simple, utilitarian design that is at home on OD green and black natos. Haha.

That’s about where I’m at. I love the 187 case shape, finishing, etc. But I’m drawn to the simplicity of the 317. Choices!!!
