PRX 35 Quartz Vs. PRX 35 Automatic

After Tissot made the PRX 35 Automatic I was certain that it was a watch that I wanted to buy. But I am in doubt if it should be the Quartz or the Automatic version. I don't own a Automatic watch (yes one I made myself, but it don't count) - and I am not sure about the Automatic. How often is it have to be serviced? How often do I have to set the time, because it looses time or gain time? Is Quartz just easier? What would you choose?

I like the waffle dial on the Auto. If they had a quartz it would be the winner especially if you already have bunch of automatics. I personally sometimes struggle with setting a watch when I'm on my way out the door.

I like quartz watches but Tissot is a smart company and made the waffle dial only available in the more expensive automatic. I'd go with the more interesting dial.

Hi Ayadai

Thank you very much for your comment. Those are some good points you make. I feel that an automatic watch is the original. Then you really want to own one like this. But yes, your comment about the price of service etc. - I think about it a lot.

Because will I pay half of what the watch costs for each service. Then all of a sudden it's not so much fun anymore. But it's probably something I just have to live with.

For the idea of a watch without a battery, but a mechanical one, I thing is very cool and the best.

Hi JJMM1983

Yeah the waffle dial is really cool looking and so nice. It is a big pros for the auto. And the sunburst dial on the quartz is quickly a little boring to look at.

Yes, I also think that they can probably run for a very long time. It is a bit interesting to see how long an automatic watch could work without service.

But it is clearly something to take into consideration.

Because if I can just stretch it to maybe 6-7 years, then I think I will definitely be able to get it to service.

The waffle dial on the auto is more interesting, but since it was twice as expensive, the quartz is the way to go for me

I find quartz to be much easier to live with but I'd rather focus on the utter weirdness of putting an automatic movement into a disco-era revival watch. The original was quartz, wasn't it? The modern design was to point out that it had the latest technology as well as the latest style.

A PRX with a Powermatic is an inauthentic betrayal of the design. It's supposed to be modern, Buck Rogers and Saturday Night Fever, but for some reason the synthetic white suits are available in vicuna instead of polyester because they can charge more to people that just don't get it.

Yes the original was a quartz. But it was also called Seastar and not PRX. Its only the design they go with. Not even the name.

I get want you mean, and understand it. But I don't think there is anything wrong with putting an automatic movement into the PRX. It is still the "old" design. It's like making an old car the way it once looked. But still have GPS, air conditioning etc. in the car. So it lives up to what people want today.

For the average person who doesn't have the time or the energy to tinker with their watch everyday, I always suggest Quartz watches. For them their watch is a tool, they are way more concerned about their job and family than their watch. If this is you then you should go with Quartz. If not go with the Auto.

That is a good point. I like that. The dial on the auto is just so cool instead of the one on the Quartz.

Since you are doing all these calculations, it is obvious that the Quartz is the one for you !

I could define myself as a watch enthusiast. Despite being interested in mouvements and complications, i'm also aware of my limited budget. When the prx 35 was announced in quartz, I was instantly in. I had no doubts they planned to release a powermatic 80 version of it but, instead of waiting for it, I decided to get the quartz version with the green dial for two reasons. First, it is almost a 1/1 of the seastar model from 1978, which was already let's say an homage to the Rolex oysterquartz. Historically speaking, it is deeply a quartz watch. Then, it is a fun watch to wear. I like it to be a no brainer. I like the green sunburst dial, it has this "let's go party" spirit, without being ridiculous or out of place in everyday situations.
