Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?

RADO for kids from the 1970’s. The whole watch head needed to be popped out of its shell by pressing from the dial side down, thumbs at both edges, then unscrew crystal for servicing. so cool. still have it but not working anymore.

Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?

not a watch, an Elgin pocket watch from my maternal grandfather, born in 1898, died at 99 yrs of age. eldest son in his Dad’s second wife’s family. started his business life selling hand-formed soap in open markets at 13 yrs old. never went to college. eventually owned 2 public bus companies; electric motor engine & parts store; commercial RE; also had 2 wives (!) & families; actively supported resistance forces against IJA & IJN invasion of the Philippines in WW2; vowed to quit smoking when caught /interned by Kempetei, if released & not beheaded; loved America & what she did for his country. re-built life after losing everything in WW2. lifelong hatred for anything Japanese (he was NOT happy when I told him I drove a Toyota). even as a teen, his greeting to me was always “are you making money?” he never let anything take him down & he acted correctly in his dealings (as my Mom tells it). I’m half the man he was but what a legacy!

Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?

use them: appreciate them: enjoy them: give some away: sell some: buy some Don’t make them into idols.
