Story of a $14000 Rolex Submariner

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
Being in the marine/oil and gas industry since 2007, a Rolex submariner has always been on my radar. In every industry convention you will see 70% wearing a sub. It’s almost feels like security won’t let you in if you don’t have one. 😅 But back in the day, these guys did not pamper their watches. It was used and abused daily. With grimes, scratches, dinks and the works.
So in 2014, i decided to get one as a wedding watch. I walked into an AD in Singapore and they had one for sale at $8200. Good old days indeed…
I got married in March 2015 and after the wedding, I joined the 70% and wore for work daily.
End 2015, oil prices crashed and as a contractor, my work ended. I couldn’t get a job placement for months and I have a kid due May the next year. Not knowing how long this drough will last, I did what a husband/expecting father would do... I sold my sub to a private dealer to raise money. It was a huge loss but I rather have the money as back up.
I always have that heart sinking feeling everytime I saw that sub in my wedding pictures/videos. I told myself I would get it back at any cost if I had the chance.
Fast forward to Jan 2018, I got back in the industry. I contacted the dealer and told them that if the watch ever came back, do let me know.
I didn’t expect much of it but in September 2021, they called and said the guy they sold it to is reselling the watch back to them. And the rest is history… I raced down and rebought the watch at a premium.
So in total, I paid $14000 for this piece.
Did I overpay - Yes
Do I find the older/other references better - Yes
Will I ever sell it - No
Watches don’t only tell time, it’s a time capsule.

Um.. if you are not bothered by what you paid for it, then congratz, its an awesome achievement. But if you had to break an arm or leg to reacquire, then maybe you overpaid, but still quite a story there

Thank you! It’s didn’t break the bank but it broke the heart to pay that much. Haha.. I gave the dealer a dirty look and got a discount to get it back. 🙏🏻😅
