Field Watches

Do you consider military style and exploration type field watches the same category or do you make it a point to have both in your collection?

I suppose military issued fields are a sub set of the larger field category…..

I think when Vertex finally comes out with a 36mm I’m gonna have to get one

·

The term field watch is too broad.

Hot take:

Military style: mainly reissues and reinterpretations.

Explorer style: sports & luxury watches sold in ADs.

Curve ball: Studio Underd0g Series 02 is also a fun interpretation of a field watch.

No. I don't think they're the same type. I prefer the military type over the "Explorer" type.

I've never seen that Seiko before, what is it?

Congrats, its gorgeous!!

Explorer as in Rolex or out and about?

·

Don't know what an exploration style field watch is but I have neither

I would classify military-inspired and explorer-type watches both as subcategories of field watches bec their typical use case is similar i.e. something more rugged and tooly. They tend to feature the same brushed looks and dials that are designed with legibility first and foremost. I will of course have both (and then some) in my collection haha.

In my brain, watches are organised into four main categories: field, dress, dive, universal/gada/sports.

The field watch category is very diverse and once you start making a point of having a watch of every sub category, like a dirty dozen watch, and then another field style watch, but more explorer-y, then you realise that there are many levels even of those watches, you can start somewhere in China, go through Seiko, Citizen, Lorier, Nivada, Vertex and end up with a Rolex Explorer. You would end up having dozens and dozens of diverse field watches.

Where would that madness end? You open your locker, it's filled to the brim with field watches. You open your cupboard, filled with different field watches, frustrated you want to escape, you go to the garage, the car is filled to the brim with field watches.

I call them all field watches. Here's my current wish list:

I have a few others already, so realistically these are just nice-to-have. My Serica 4512 is my fav probably next to my Timex Expedition.

Hopefully, I'll never need a field watch, as I live in a neutral country (and real watches worn on the battlefield these days are G-Shocks and Garmin's rather than Dirty Dozen reissues anyway).

Realistically, I won't need an explorer style watch either. All mountains in this country have been climbed and I prefer to admire them from the valley.

Thus, in my planned 6-watch collection, I group them into the same category, but I'm still undecided whether this slot will be covered by an echo/neutra Averau or a Traska Summiteer.

Gotta have both.

You gotta have the beater field watch, and then the field watch that's a little nicer for the office, then the actual beater watch, and then the field watch that has heritage. It's only logical.

What’s the bottom Seiko? Beautiful watch.
