Q: How did you get into watch collecting?

I got into watch collecting quite naturally. I've always been wearing a watch since my first Flik Flak as a kid. My interest continued to grow over the years, transitioning to a Casio DB-360-1A in middle school. High school had a little fashion watch mishap with an Emporio Armani AR0489, but that didn't deter me. Proper watch collecting began after purchasing my first "real watch," which was a Longines Conquest Heritage, reference number L1.611.4.52.2. That's when I truly fell in love with the art and craftsmanship of timepieces.

Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?

Yes, I do. My Poljot 17 Jewels has a particularly interesting story. It was gifted to me by my Northern Vietnamese grandma a few years after my grandfather passed away. It was his watch, which he bought in Soviet Moscow in the 70s. The sentimental value of this watch makes it priceless to me.

Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?

One piece of advice I have for someone just getting into watches is to carefully consider whether a smartwatch is the right choice for you. If you already own a nice mechanical watch and are contemplating a smartwatch for sports or tracking purposes, think twice. I made that mistake, thinking I needed one for my running, swimming, and gym activities, but realized I didn't actually need all the tracking features, especially if I'm not doing marathon-level exercise. Smartwatches tend to lure you into wearing them all the time to monitor your sleep, daily steps, or how long you've been standing, which can be distracting. Plus, they may not always look the best, as I discovered when I saw photos of myself on stage at an important event with my smartwatch on, and it looked very out of place. If you already have a nice mechanical watch that you love, I recommend sticking with it and not getting a smartwatch. It can be a huge distraction when you already have a phone for most of your digital needs.

Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?

Lately, I've been particularly drawn to a few watch brands. I've always had a strong affinity for Omega, Breitling, Tudor, and Longines; their designs and craftsmanship consistently impress me. However, I've also had my eye on IWC, specifically the IWC Mark XX, and Jaeger LeCoultre, particularly their iconic Reverso collection. These brands offer a blend of history, innovation, and timeless style that continues to captivate my interest in the world of watches.

Q: What is your grail watch and why?

My grail watch is the Patek Philippe Aquanaut for its timeless elegance, horological excellence, rich heritage, exclusivity, versatility, resale value, iconic design, and the idea of passing down a legacy, making it the ultimate timepiece that combines both contemporary style and traditional craftsmanship.
