Brand new watch running fast

I recently acquired a Glycine GL0419 Combat Sub, and it’s running a little fast for my taste right out of the box - around +30 per day by my reckoning. The movement is the ETA 2824-2 which normally runs around +/- 12 to +/- 30 per day.

I’m not freaking out just yet, and I’m not expecting chronometer spec; in fact I’m wondering if this is something that happens with brand new movements, and they settle in eventually.

I have other watches with the same or equivalent movement (Sellita SW200 and Sopro P024) and they run around +10 or so.

What would you do? Send it back to the shop and ask for a regulation, give it a while to see if it settles in, or live with it?

I'd ask the seller if it can be regulated, if it's out of spec. ( It might be a Sellita.Glycine uses both the 2824 and the Sellita under the same designation of GL224)

If not have a local watchmaker do it.

It COULD also be magnetized - somewhere along the shipping process..

·

It takes 10 seconds for a watch to run in, according to my watchmaker.

I would return the watch, ask them to check the movement and get a new watch.

Had the same problem with a Sinn U50 that i bought new from our AD. The watch never settled, just got worse over time until it eventually stopped working after a few minutes.

Turns out that the oils had dried and one “something” was too long, and needed replacing. All this on a brand new Selitta SW300 movement.

QC is not what it used to be.

I do have a demagnetiser, will try that today and see if it makes a difference.

·

Don't have any tips, just swinging through to mention that - movement issue aside - that's a compelling design. Great color choices and surface contrasts.

·

Goto Youtube channel, check your watch is magnetized and regulate mechanical watch. If you like it, buy the equipments you need. Try it. It make your journey more special.

I’m very sorry for your trouble with that watch! I hope you can resolve it soon.

By the way, that’s a lovely watch! I love the green. I have a Farer that has a similar look:

Obviously, it’s a completely different type of watch, but green, green, beautiful green!

The Farer has a very satiny dial. I like the way light plays with it.

Cheers!

This doesn’t make sense, since Glycine is known to regulate their automatics in three different positions. My Glycine Combat sub 39 is between +1 to +2. I would buy a cheap demagnetizer, and if that doesn’t work, any competent watchmaker can regulate it.

Came to say this. Got a few watches magnetized from the scanners they use to see through packages..!

·

Very cool dial color btws. 👌🏻

I'd also check for magnetization first.

·

First step would be attempting to demagnetize, second would contact seller, and after they told me to pound sand, regulate it myself

·

Thanks chaps, yeah the watch is practically brand new at this stage; I'll give the demagnetiser a go later on. But I doubt the retailer (Gnomon Singapore) will ask me to pound sand 🤣 fingers crossed the demagnetiser does the trick.

Nah. Gnomon actually has good customer service. And they have watchmakers (one or more) in their shop that does warranty work and repairs. I would try to demagnetize, and if that doesn’t work, Gnomon will either exchange it for another unit, regulate it themselves, or they sometimes will cover the bill for one of your local watchmakers to make the repair.

I sent them back a crap Squale 1545 mint green back in 2015. It had a lot of issues. They gave me a full refund

Thanks! So, the thing is, I'm colour-blind haha. While I do see a tinge of green in the photo, the watch is advertised as having a "grey dial".... so, maybe it's the lighting? In any case, well done on the Farer, it looks great!

Thanks! Colourblind, eh? You’re not the first person I’ve run across with that issue. In this case, I hope you won’t be annoyed if I find it rather amusing?

I have a green watch that the company swears is grey. Although I’m an artist and way back in Art College I got honours in colour, maybe I’m seeing things…

Who cares, you’ve still got an attractive watch!

Here’s to having it swiftly repaired/replaced!

Very best of luck,

Tim

haha no issue, I find it amusing at times myself. In fact, my brother-in-law and I both have the same type of colour-blindness, and we bond over it in the most random ways. "Is this banana ripe yet?" etc. But yes, can't wait to try the demagnetiser and hope for the best!

·

Acquired it from the Gnomon boutique (I live in Singapore) so yeah they'll be getting a call if my demagnetiser doesn't at least bring it down to +10/day.

I was thinking the same thing

·

Just get quartz version :>

·

It's possible it is magnetised, but would generally be running faster than that if it were the case. The ETA2824 is a very easy movement to regulate. There is a small screw at the end of the balance wheel arm with +/- indicated. Turn it a little and all will be sorted.

·
Dude

Just get quartz version :>

To be fair I was wearing a quartz for most of the day. Glycine back on the wrist now.

“Is this banana ripe?” Ha haha 😂

·

Self regulating will also void any remaining warranty.

You live next to Gnomon? I buy from them too, except I’m in the U.S. Tell them to pick up Tudor and Longines product lines.

So a quick situation update: I managed to use the demagnetiser on the watch head, and wound it up. Time was 1840hrs.

It is now around 1702hrs the next day, and it seems to only have lost around 1 second so far.

In short, the demagnetiser seems to have done the trick. Thanks all for your suggestions!
