I think it's a valid concern, however if you trace back to the date when critics were given, it was at the earlier stage (possibly the first batch) of the production/sales of this watch. Same as you, I was skeptical at first, but their customer services actually intrigued me and I think they deserve a second chance.
After few days, I got the watch and it is still by far one of my favourite watches among my collection. I have no problem with it, the common misaligned of chronograph hand with Seiko VK63/64 movement is widely known to the community and the fix is pretty easy.
Overall I would still prefer my Orient Kamasu over this. The finishing, quality and looks are miles better, and considering that Seiko is marking up prices due to its popularity, it is no longer the best deal in the market. That being said, Orient is the new Seiko.
Like you said, it's an easy recommendation for new collectors to buy Seiko 5s, and I agree with you. Seiko is already a renowned brand with heritage, it easily gives new buyers confidence in the brand and product.
