Watch Ranting

There is a line between being critical, overly positive, as well as just ranting on every little thing. To be honest watching watch reviews are always a hit or miss, I guess I also mostly enjoy being able to see various angles and details of the watch more than listening to the opinions of the reviewers.

As we may know there are several channels that are also ADs so most of the “reviews” tend to be positive. There’s also the sponsored videos, which may be critical and transparent, but still mostly positive. But I can’t help but feel several channels just tend to bash or over criticize some watches.

Sure, it does open our eyes to issues on some popular watches, or how great of a “value” other watches are by comparing the most minuscule of details. But to me, if all you do is moan and moan on what you don’t like about a watch it just defeats the purpose for me. I guess psychologically it’s tiring to just hear someone keep on moaning for 10 even 15 minutes on the negatives of a watch or brand.

To me it’s hard to believe that you can’t find any positives on a watch, or how does the reviewer not get tired of just finding and mentioning every little thing they don’t like. Don’t mind having a moans and niggles section of a video, but if almost every other video of popular brands is just bashing it, while praise is given to those “value” watches is just tiring.

Then again, I do still watch the reviews anyway. So maybe I’m the problem 🤷‍♂️

Find the reviewers that share your sense of style, and care about the things you care about.

It took me a bit of time, but I'm down to just a few regular channels I watch, as the reviewers tend to see watches in much the same way I do.

There's always the mute button!

I don't really mind reviews that are overly positive, because I'm not really looking to YouTube reviewers for a fair age balanced appraisal of how good a watch is. My starting assumption is that the videos are advertisements in some form or other, but I can still enjoy them. I just like to learn about watches I've never heard of, and having a reviewer point out nice things about a watch is pleasant enough. For me, the great YouTubers tell me about something other than just the physical aspects of the watch. For instance, I like youreterrific quite a lot.

Great take, thanks mate 🙏🏽 I guess once I watch 1-2 videos, other channels pop up in my home page. But agree on filtering the ones with similar tastes

Thanks mate, true the mute button can be used 😂

I avoid the screamers and madman reviews like poison. They offer little value. There’s another very pompous channel which shall remain unnamed that gives me the shivers so I also avoid it with urgency.

I like:

  • Federico

  • Teddy

  • Tim at caseback watches

  • Tim Mosso

  • Andrew Morgan

  • Britt

  • Ellie

  • Wristwatch Revival (fun and satisfying)

  • ID guy

  • Just one more watch

FWIW

😃

If only there was one you could use on other things in life!

I like to watch several reviews about a watch before committing to a purchase, so I don't mind the occasional negative review. It's all about balance.

I know some reviews will be overly positive because they're trying to sell me something with an affiliate link in the description (most of them). I know some will focus only on the negatives because they dislike the brand or their audience does. Combining them gives a better picture of what you're getting into and turns this black and white review game into a more objective grey.

So… no opinions allowed? Lovely, we’ll issue the memo this afternoon and we can all live in an echo chamber. A crap watch is a crap watch, it’s fine to say that. Bias is a thing, you have to cut through it, and I am happy to take the rough with the smooth. We need more rough.

·

I too watch many reviews before making a purchase, but have come to accept that any watch I buy will be praised by some and/or critised by others. I own watches that reviewers critiqued but I personally enjoyed (Seiko Sumo Solar GMT, Orient Symphony), and others I passed on even though they were well-reviewed (e.g., Tissot PRX, Hamilton Khaki Field). Ultimately, I buy what I like and wear what I buy ☺️

It’s not about no opinions mate, but there’s one channel which I prefer not to name that is making videos negating every big brand and putting a positive to Chinese brands which is alright in some sense, but if all the videos keep discussing it whilst mentioning another channel to me is almost towards clickbait. Then again maybe it’s my problem also stumbling upon and watching the guys videos 😅

YourTerrific, Random Rob and Hafiz J Mehmood. Maybe I’m missing a few, but you really don’t need much more than those.

You can name and we can discuss whether it is opinion or sensation… just a thought. I have my suspicions.

Sure mate, it’s the channel I Like Watches. Not subscribed but keeps popping in my homepage, and also had some sort of drama last year if I’m not mistaken. But his latest videos sort of “tagging” Nico Leonard just because of an opinion on Rolex I feel is sensational. Just a feeling after watching his videos though. Any thoughts? Or are you suspecting a different channel 😆

·

I've started to drop reviewers (& brands) that don't regularly go into the details about watches that I care about (super subjective, I know).

My personal pet peeve is watch thickness & profile. Brands do a great job of showing off the dial, and most mention diameter and lug width, but if a brand or reviewer doesn't comment on, or explain/show case thickness/profile that is an immediate red flag.

Too many hockeypucks out there with beautiful dials. I've been hurt too many times before not to have trust issues.

Definitely who I thought - Rolex diss recently upset a few people. He’s triggered a lot of people… all with a few macros. He has an agenda (of sorts), and he clearly floats around the affordable end of the market. I also think he has a point, but don’t let me stop you. I’ve handled enough watches at all ends of the spectrum to appreciate what he is trying to say, bias and hyperbole aside.

Thanks mate, I thought there might be someone else. Yeah I don’t know, but the story telling of the video just seems off to me. But the point from the macros are valid in some sense. Thanks for the discussion, didn’t know if my thoughts on that channel was too personal or what

No - he’s upset a lot of folk, even on here. The thing that people need to consider is that a lot of micros use the same manufacturers/assemblers, and after a while they’ve got very good at what they do, and at volume. Plus, take the reverence out of it, just look at the products side-by-side and there are parts of the build that just aren’t as good as they should be on both sides of the fence. I remember the first time I handled a Pagani Design, and I was surprised at what I had: I was struggling to understand how it was being sold for what it was. You can buy some of them for £30 with a mecaquartz movement, sapphire, bracelet, and a textured dial, and the indices line up. Makes you think…

I appreciate those that provide information; details to be aware of, comparison of features, etc. I’ve learned lots about watches in general.

Ultimately, their opinion is just that, one person’s opinion.
