Battery replacement

Does anyone here cringe at the thought of going to the AD for service?

I’m a believer in repairing the watches from its original maker, but I feel taken advantage of this time around.

I took my wife’s watch in to have a battery replacement. They say they can’t just do the battery, but that it requires an overhaul of internal parts, and replace the oil cause it’s dry!! Also requires repolishing of the case and bring it to new.

I just did this exact same service four years ago!!

What’s going on with these AD tactics?

Would you go through with it or bring somewhere else?

Maybe this is why I prefer automatic movements!

If you just had this done 4 years ago why would the lubricants dry out so quickly? I would ask them that. You would think in that short time it wouldn't. They should be financially responsible for it then. I honestly would just take it to a different place to have a battery put in. Other places carry the same brand of battery.

Same thing when taking the car to get an oil change and getting sold on every service under the sun. It’s extortion.

·

I’d just reply back and say can you just change the battery only please.

·

I suspect any watchmaker can change that battery for 30 bucks.

·

They are trying to force unnecessary services on you. I would insist that you only want the battery replaced if they quote a reasonable price for it, or give your business to a more honest local watchmaker.

The lubricant can not be dry!

I believe their responses are on auto pilot and predetermined to upsell as @SpecKTator mention… extortion.

It simple has to be.

Exactly what I think. That's why if it were done 4 years ago they should be responsible. That would mean it wasn't properly lubed.

Hate it when the lube is dry 😂

Hmmm....I have a Seiko quartz watch that has been running for 35 years with battery and gasket changes. (Seiko will also sell me a drop-in replacement of the movement, if necessary.)

Maybe Cartier needs to import Japanese lubricants? 😉

·

I have no doubt, and I am aware that the Japanese make amazing movements last long time, but so do the Swiss.

This is simply a money grab.

Thank you.

I suspect some of these practices will be investigated further. A judge recently ruled in favor of a watchowner for unfair commercial practices.

Did they give a reason why?

Ahh yes , I saw that. Go in for a racket come out with a rebuilt case and movement. Silly practises!

Thanks for sharing…

They use the word necessary a lot !

I don’t see a valid reason, not if you believe it.

Have a look and see …

That’s horse$hit. They prob wouldn’t tell, but I would request a listing of everything being replaced, why wasn’t it fixed during the last inspection. I wonder if the watch was still under warranty if they would say all the following are necessary.
