Is the Oris Aquis a future classic?

I have an Aquis Caliber 400, and I really, really like it. I have lots of watches I really enjoy, but whenever I come back to this one, I’m always impressed with its finishing and aesthetics. I just can’t find anything on it that I would change. This model is newer, but hasn’t had many changes over the years. Is this just another good looking contemporary watch, or is it likely to become a more appreciated piece as time goes on?

Interested to hear other folks takes on this.

Oris is awesome and the Aquis is already a classic IMO. I do feel like they made (and continue to make) a ton of them. I think in watch circles it will always be appreciated, even if the price does not reflect it.

I wish they made the Payoon in a 40, or even 41. Who knows, when it drops below $1500, I may still pick one up, sizes be damned.

Beautiful watch! The dial is gorgeous and I have always heard great things about Oris but unfortunately never had the pleasure of owning one. Looks like the type a timepiece that would definitely age well 👍

·

For sure!! Looks like it wears much smaller with shorter lug size

·

I like their riff on integrated TBH. 👌🏻

·

It has the hallmarks of a classic. Toned down yet visually appealing, no-nonsense approach with focus on usability and quality.

I think it's a handsome watch. But classic? Well, we will have to see how Oris as a brand does.

Look, there are a lot of handsome watches around. After all, these things cost an arm and a leg to... look pretty. Their time keeping capacity, in general, is inferior to that of a fitness tracker (and that's before you think about tracking fitness, ok?). So being handsome is the job of a decent watch.

This watch in particular is relatively easy to love. It looks nice. It's finished well (not the best, but definitely well). Again, it's handsome. It's relatively resistant to the elements.

But so are plethora of other dive or sport watches, from fellow Swiss brand Longines (although Longines strikes a more vintage style) to Orient to Seiko to various microbrands. Oris watches do look their prices (high), but nothing out of ordinary (the way that, e.g. Orient Bambino looks exceptionally well for its price, or Seiko and Citizen crazy dials of urushi and enamel for less than a grand and so on). It also lacks heritage (think Blancpain or Rolex or even Longines).

If Oris strikes big in 10 years, sure, this watch will of course be good candidate for vintage and whatnot. Again, it's good watch. But ordinarily good, not extraordinarily so.

Just my $0.02

Note: I earlier wrote that Longines and Oris were "fellow Swatch brand." Well, it's not (thanks for pointing it out; I know that Oris was at one point merged with Swatch predecessor ASUAG, but didn't realize it was spun-off/bought-back-out-to-independence). My bad.

Good take here - tho Oris is independent not part of swatch..

Oris has been around a long time, and they are not part of the Swatch Group.

Otherwise I broadly agree, the Aquis is a good watch in a sea of good watches.

·

I assumed it was already a classic.

Give it all your love 👍

·

Love my Aquis! It’s easily my favorite watch at the moment. Such a comfortable bracelet and wears amazing. I had an older Seamaster 300m and I actually prefer the Aquis over it. I had the dealer I bought it from do a full brush on the case and bracelet

Oversized, overrated and overpriced. Nope.

Overrated and overpriced. No problem there.

Oversized makes you sound like you don’t know much about the watch. There are four sizes available, starting at 36.5 mm and it has an incredibly short lug to lug with female end links.

The 36.5 is 12.5mm thick. That's just goofy.
