How It Started vs. How It's Going

I'm sure we all have some 'How It Started vs. How It's Going' stories about out watches, so let's hear them!

One of mine would be this: I really like Explorer style dials, but I didn't want to go super down market to get my first one (ie: an AliExpress-friendly brand), so I went with the Steinhart Ocean One Vintage.

My rationale being, although it's a homage, it's a homage to something that hasn't been made since the 50s, and was made in such limited numbers, it was a relatively hard model to buy, even back in the day. Plus, as a Steinhart, it was a really well made watch.

Today? The Steinhart's been sold and I now have a Tudor Heritage Ranger to scratch the itch. Absolutely beloved when it was launched in 2014, the worst people say about the model today is that it's 'too big' but given my above average wrist size, I wear it like a lot of guys wear a 38mm watch. So I'm happy.

Anyway, you get the idea. What's a watch you started with, and where have you traded up to, to still scratch the itch, today?

I thought I wanted a blacked out field watch. So I went with this.

GREAT example of what I mean! :)

I had too many straps, all in 18mm. Now I have too many straps in 20 and 22mm as well.

I used to have reliable cheap quartz watches. I still do, but now I'm stuck tending to these needy mechanicals as well. And I could've gone on a cruise for the amount spent on repairs last year.

Ha! I started on a Seiko SNK809 for field, felt it was too small, ended up on a Hamilton Khaki King.
