Monta oceanking

Good morning crunchers! Monta has recently come under my radar. I have been doing some research but I wanted to see if anyone here has had any experience with the new oceanking. I am in the market for a new watch, I wanted to stay away from the big brands and purchase something from a microbrand. At first glance this watch is really a looker. If anyone does have any hands on experience I would really appreciate it!

Own a Monta Noble and can say the design, for/finish, and overall experience buying from them has been great. Reviews on have seen social media and in Monta groups has been very positive - with biggest props on the Mark3 being it's it's more refined and less busy. The biggest negative take aways have been it's more generic and favors the Submariner more than it used to.

Another Noble owner here. I love their stuff and I've talked to Justin and Michael at two different Windup Watch fairs and they are very approachable people who obviously believe and stand behind their product. I think some people feel this makes them come off as pretentious, but I don't see it that way. YMMV.

Love the v2 as well. Is the bracelet as good as everyone says?

Love the color on that dial!

That depends. The answer is yes if your wrist is 7” or larger. The answer is no if your wrist is less than 7”. The swing arm on the clasp is long and if you have a smaller wrist, it causes some of the links to protrude. Also, the clasp has a triangular cut at the end that causes the last link to show wear marks over time. I think Monta has corrected both flaws with their new 6 position adjustable clasp so a new owner might be safe. If you are buying preowned and you have a smaller wrist, be forewarned. But the quality and comfort is phenomenal for me and I’m right at 7” in wrist diameter.

I have a Noble - which I think is a similar bracelet and, yes, it's really comfortable. The on the fly micro adjust works well and is about a full link in width. The articulation really helps the bracelet lay correctly on my wrist. The only negative is that the clasp was really hard to open for the first, say, two weeks of wear. It's brilliant now, and secure, but I did think it was going to rip my fingernail off those first few days.

I love Monta. I really hope they succeed long term. I'm not in marketing or the watch business, so my my completely un-informed opinion is that they need to differentiate a bit more from Rolex than they are currently headed, but the quality of this Noble that I own is absolutely amazing. No question.

Here are pictures of clasp wear and possible link protrusion.

I was able to see it in Chicago at windup last July. Looks great in person. I wasn’t able to handle the prototype but was able to try on the skyquest and I’ve handled previous gen Oceankings.

They fit well. Sit low on the wrist. Lugs are slightly longer than my Black Bay 58 as they are pushing 50mm. But fit and finish is really good for the money.

Best bracelet I’ve worn to be honest. The micro adjustment makes it so custom. Comfortable with a premium feel. The clasp on these are large. I have a 6.75inch wrist but it’s ok.

@SpecKTator Kevin is a big fan, he probably knows a lot

Thank you, my friend. It was a big reason for what drew me to this watch. But after getting it in pink, I'd be lying if I hadn't considered buying the blue or opaline versions as well. It's that good.

I have the Monta Noble and it's a great watch. If I had to dump my entire collection and just have one watch, it would be the one to keep.

That being said, it's not perfect. Opening the clasp requires you to dig your finger nails into a little groove, and then the actual opening is inelegant, requiring a little bit of brute force to pop the clasp open. The clasp itself comes with 3 points of on-the-fly microadjustment, but requires you to remove the watch to get to that mechanism. The bracelet itself is beautifully finished with a smooth feel.

That Oceanking V3 looks really good. Other than the movement, it seems like it actually has some innovative features dealing with the bezel and bracelet construction.

·

I don't have one but have been looking at them for a while, so I'll be interested to see responses to your question.

My Luminox is like that. You have to pop it open using Captain America’s shield just to get it off. 😂

Yeah, I've been looking at that too. V3 has the upgraded bracelet with 6 points of micro adjust. It's a better bracelet than my Monta Noble.

·

I have the v2 skyquest (same case as the ocean king) and can attest to the great fit an finish with Monta.

Also, the watch is super thin and the bracelet is ridiculously comfortable.

Will it fit on the Noble? I think they sell the 6-point bracelet on their site for just north of $600. You could swap it out.

But that said, I was just quoted $800 for an Omega Aqua Terra bracelet, so $600 isn't chump change.

I read somewhere that they swapped the bracelet and it fit. But I would confirm with them. And honestly, the current bracelet is fine for me.

@branz11 Check out @MarcusEDC's youtube. He has two recent videos with the OceanKing 3 that go into a lot of detail about the watch and the wearing/ownership experience.

Agreed. I haven't been tempted to "upgrade" either.

I recently picked up a (used) Monta Triumph v3. I tried it on at Chicago Windup last summer and spoke with the guys at the brand. I was really impressed. I didn't get to try on the OK as that was in a display case and still a prototype I guess. The new clasp looks like it's a little bit nicer, but I've not experienced it. I love the quick adjust clasp, but my older one is one area where it's solid, but certainly not at something like Tudor level (then again that goes for most other brands). The articulating links on the bracelet and overall fit and finish are very solid. It definitely feels like a luxury watch. The AR coating is great and the finish on the applied indices and hands is excellent. Obviously the OK is thicker, but my Triumph is thin and is very comfortable on wrist.

Lovely watch. Another very high quality diver from an independent is the Formex Reef.

How big is your wrist? I have a 6.5 - 6.75 inch wrist. And I’m somewhat interested in the monta oceanking

·

I'm just shy of 7" typically. Depending on the day and what I've eaten, I'm anywhere between 6.75" and 7".
