Ulysse Nardin - Marine Torpilleur Review

When faced with the day2day life having a gentlemen’s watch is useful. Having gone with the rubber strap option has made this watch versatile. Not really a statement timepiece but not something you see everyday. The Marine Torpilleur is something unique and grows on you. Ironically, for a marine watch it is only water resistant and lacks the “proof” as with other makers in the industry. It would be great to have a gentleman’s watch with a robust tool aspect to it. This being said, I’ve grown to love this watch.

Positives: a screw down crown somehow makes you feel it’s a bit more secure. The rubber strap helps with daily use as you don’t have to worry about sweat, washing hands and all that stuff. It’s got a great power reserve indicator and it’s 50hrs.

Things to Improve: would have loved an easier rubber strap option. Fitting it is a chore and spending all that extra time at the AD and even at home again makes it ”not luxurious”. The hour markers, hands and indicators do not illuminate. This should be basic in 2023. Finally, for a screw down crown the AD said it’s still 100m water resistant. For a marine watch it seems a bit ironic.

Overall, I’m happy with the decision. It’s not common and when you wear it people do notice it compared to the other heavily marketed grails. Would I purchase another? probably not. But would I recommend this? Sure, if you want something unique and to stand against the common trends. Try it on, have a go. It fits the world we live in today. Unique and Full of potential.

They are determined to fill up that dial, aren't they?

Very nice looking watch, as one comment 'fill up the dial' was said I think it is done very well and legible...I'm with you I think its a terrific lookiong watch..

·

Very good review of the pros/cons. Good looking watch.

·

Gorgeous watch, I love how they have kept the nautical "deck watch" theme very prominent on this one.

I have a 263-67 from about 10 years ago. There is some lume but not as much as I'd like. I'm surprised that since then they haven't added a quick adjust or any made any significant improvements to the rubber strap.
You're quite right on it being a subtle and understated. I've been to some boutiques and AD where some folks weren't too familiar. Love how your dial pops out.

Love watches with the power reserve indicator. Well done.

The Torpilleur is the well-done approach (actually the best I know of) to make a classical mechanical marine chronometer of the 50ies (the ones with fusee-and-chain, mounted on a gimbal in a teak box) into a wrist watch. The prime example of what 50 years of evolution can do.

A good, symmetry-oriented approach to the dial. The addition of a date displayed in a round window probably harkens back to the visual language of portholes. They really mean it.

Well chosen!
