A Grail of Gifts
I have a small watch box from IFL to house a box of grail gifts.
Is it possible for a grail to be a gift? Some might say it wasn’t earned. However, each of these have a special meaning behind them.
The AP was a gift from my late uncle. It is my only AP and it to my knowledge is quite rare. The 36 DJ is a gift from my dad who also was gifted to him for saving a patient’s life.
The two modern day Rolex DJs are gifts from my twin for securing deals which we thought are unheard of. The AirKing gifted to me from the Mrs. After our 2nd child was born.
Finally, Mr. Dumont, Christmas gift 2024 from the kids to me. Super precious cos they both are my little jems.
Anyone been gifted a grail? Does it count as a grail? To me it totally does.

I used to think a Grail must be reserved for self purchase because it meant that the individual felt they had earned it.
However, after reading the why's of your gifted Grails, I think it can mean more when they are gifted from someone in the manners you've described.
Sounds like you've earned yours by being the son, nephew, brother, partner, husband & father you obviously are and to that I say, well earned & I tip my cap to you.

A grail is a grail, no matter how it comes, once its given with clean hands, i dont see a problem with it, count yourself horologically blessed

I didn't know enough about watches or watch collecting vernacular to understand that I was being gifted some grail level watches until much later.
It's pretty cool when a gift sparks a new area of mutual enjoyment though I think watches being gifted to those who don't appreciate them is perhaps the number one reason for NIB opportunities a generation later.

I’m unsure on the definitions of both grail and gift, but I have given myself some excellent watches.

However, I would suggest that the term "grail watch" is generally defined as a watch of such desirability that it transcends all other watches. It's the pinnacle, the peak of watches to you as an individual. The minute you a have a box of them, or dare I suggest, two "grails" they are no longer your "grail" watch, they are merely a collection of nice watches.
Should you believe in the concept of buying a grail watch (which I don't), it should be a watch that will never be equalled or surpassed by any other watch. If it is, whatever has surpassed it, takes the title away from the original.

Oh absolutely it can, that's why I don't believe that for me a grail watch exists. Were I to own a Grand Lange 1, after a period of time my attention would switch to another watch to aspire to owning.
However acquired a grail is a grail.
