My Explorer trio

As if I'm addicted to Explorer watches... Every time I see one, I can't help but stare at its intricate details and imagine the adventures it has been on. There's something about these timepieces that captures the essence of exploration and discovery. Maybe it's the ruggedness of the design or the reliability of the movement, but there's no denying the allure of an Explorer watch. Do you feel the same way? I have 3 Explorer look alike that I wear occasionally. They all have painted dial because I like to keep it simple, legible and boring.

I love an “explorer” watch.

The only one I can’t get on with is the Rolex Explorer I. I just can’t get past those god-awful Microgramma font numerals 🫤

·

I honestly can't say I do. In fact, the list of time-only watches I like is exceptionally short.

What's the middle one? TIA

The Explorer 1 is my dare to dream watch. My intent here is not to denigrate the Explorer nor it’s homages nor their admirers. However, just because Rolex’s marketing department decided to call it the “Explorer” doesn’t mean it’s been part of more death defying moments than any other watch. Expert marketers have cleverly succeeded in creating in the imaginations of buyers and potential buyers a romanticized emotional association between the idea of owning the watch and being part of a select group of fearless world adventurers.

I contend that G-Shocks go on more daredevil escapades than what has today essentially become a $10,000 piece of very cool looking jewelry. Not that there’s anything wrong with a $10,000 piece of cool looking jewelry, but all of the niche categorization of watch types is nothing more than the result of expert mind/emotion/desire manipulators in marketing departments doing whatever they can do to get people to open their wallets.

Which one is the Real Slim Shady!!??

I have an Explorer fixation. I’ve a 14270 Swiss Only. I don’t have a 1016–which is not going to happen. I have the Smiths Everest gilt, then it becomes a 3-6-9 focus. Below is a partial example of what I mean. Old photo.

I like watches associated with a particular expedition.

Actually been working on a long-form post about watches like the Explorer, Smiths Everest, Eterna Kontiki, Tudor Ranger, Enicar Sherpa, Nivada Antarctic, Yema BiPole, Kobold Polar Surveyor, Doxa Mission 31, Lip Himalaya, etc.

I really love that Railmaster but I suspect it’s too small for me to wear comfortably. I had written off ever rocking an explorer until they announced the 40mm

Me too.. I recently had a smiths gilt dial and a lorier falcon3 and am currently saving up for either the 114270 or 124270 while resisting the temptation to either buy an incipio or san martin or another smiths everest with the matt black dial...
