I was struggling for inspiration this morning and couldn't decide what to wear and photograph.

Then I remembered my 1950s Timex Marlin. As you can see I've done nothing to its looks since it made its (not so) grand entrance a few weeks ago. It's still beaten up scratched beyond belief and showing that the last 70 years has not been an easy life for it. But it's cleaned, oiled and ticking away reasonably well. Even the clasp on the bamboo bracelet is functional again.

But I'm now thinking I may just leave the watch in this condition. For I can think of only one other watch (see @rubies_are_a_girls_best_friend and her grandmother's wonderful Timex) that truly encapsulates the philosophy of Wabi Sabi.. the aesthetic of transience and imperfection.

Not everything needs to be new and shiny to be beautiful and loved.

Sometimes imperfection is perfection. Truly shows that someone wore this. Another beauty John!

·

It’s a beauty, as is!

Would definitely wear it in the current cosmetic condition 👍 - think it adds swagger and character to the old guy! (Talking about the watch, John!) 😆

·

If watches could talk, what stories this one would have👌💥

·

Well said, John. Keep those memories encapsulated under every nick, scratch, nook and cranny—even if you weren’t there when it happened. These objects carry a life all unto their own. Who are we to erase them when we’re merely nothing but temporary stewards anyway?

I'm pretty old as well, Willard. But this watch still has another decade on me 😲

Thank a lot, Al. You say it better than I can.. I should get you write up my posts 🙏🏻

Totally, John - we must all embrace the Wabi Sabi Way 👏 I recently unearthed my old watch, which I wore all the time (it was my dad’s watch) and it always had a dent on it then and the straps were always worn out but I loved it. At the moment, it needs fixing, but I’m looking forward to sharing with everyone my own, ‘imperfect beauty’ soon.

·

Some of my most prized Watches are all original and well loved ( Bangs and Scratches) enjoy it the way it is.

·

Wise words, John. I consider myself extremely blessed to be loved by my family, despite not being new, shiny, or beautiful. 😁 Love this Timex. 😍

·

Very well said, my friend!

·

Exactly, Jon. We can sometimes be too precious about things, but those imperfections make it ours. Your Marlin looks great.

·

Beauty is hidden in the imperfections! I was always attracted by that law John!

In the case of this beautiful vintage Timex Marlin I see a bright and elegant dial under a thin layer of cracked ice

I wouldn’t change a thing 👌

You're loved by all of us, Lawrence, despite being 'definitely' new, shiny, or... Nah, I can't be that cruel 😂

Spot on Kostas.. in another 70 years someone will say.. "I'm glad John didn't change a thing" 🤓

Your sentiment here reminds me of the Velveteen rabbit: “‘It doesn’t happen all at once,’ said the Skin Horse. ‘You become. It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t happen often for people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.’”

Here’s to all the Velveteen watches out there that have become Real. 🍻

Looks fine the way it is John.

That's really good, Gina. I've never heard of the Velveteen Rabbit, I must check it out.

Perfect description of me. Has my wife been posting my photo again 😉

Thanks, Danilo.. I have to agree, I kind of like it 👍🏻

I think I'm two-minded about this. Like everyone else I love gazing at immaculate dials around here, and I myself try my very best to keep the collection in showroom condition. But the utilitarian in me loves seeing new life breathed into not-quite-relics, be they tools, garments, cars... or watches. Something that others around here like @FlatteryCamp has taken commendable effort in conserving, and shedding light on pieces that deserve to be revived and remembered. May your Timex live out its retirement years long and faithfully counting away.
