Islander Northport with an issue, anyone wants to give it a try?

Hello fellow Crunchers,

So I bought this Northport sometime last winter. Not too long after starting to wear it I had an issue with the crown. It wouldn’t screw down anymore.

I contacted Mark at LongIslandWatch with a description of what I was seeing and he quickly decided to send me a replacement, which I got it the mail for free a few days later.

By the way, Big Kudos to him! It’s great to see how customer service is a top priority for him and his company!

After that, I’ve tried to take the faulty watch to several shops to attempt a repair and no one came back with a solution.

It was either “go get some parts”, “get your money back”, “don’t buy a micro brand”, or “don’t buy online”.

The only guy who actually gave it a fair try and spent some time on it said the springy thingy inside the crown broke and was stuck inside of it.

So anyway I have two identical NorthPorts and I’m tired of seeing this one that I’m not wearing take space in the drawer. I’m quite busy these days and I won’t take the time to dive into the rabbit hole of trying to find parts and fix it myself.

So this is where I’m going with all this:

If anyone in the community would like to give it a try and get it fixed, I’m giving it away.

2 ground rules:

  • Just pay me for the shipping from Toronto

  • Don’t go after Mark, he already did his due diligence with this watch.

I 100% can fix it

·

Very kind, be good to see someone get it up and running again. (Not me)

Good luck 👍

·

What a generous offer! This is exactly why WC is different than other sites.

·

If ThirdWatch passes on it, I may take a crack at it. Very generous of you. Honestly, I'm mostly surprised that Marc let you keep the old one after sending you a replacement. 😲

I know! I was surprised too when I got the second one! really good guy.

Wait a sec... Marc sent you an entire 2nd watch because of a crown issue? These things are about $400 if I remember right. Why wouldn't he have just had you send in the first one for warranty repair?

I know. I have no idea how much it actually costs to produce one of these things for him, versus the cost of shipping / repair and potential damage to the brand image. He said he had kept one as a backup and just mailed it in an envelope. Doing so may not have been the most short term cost-saving measure, but he did secure a returning customer, and we're all talking about it here. good for his brand in the longer run I guess

·

Ok so it looks like we have a winner, I'm preparing to ship the watch to @ThirdWatch

He said he'll repair it and document the process on WC. 😊 (no pressure haha)

I hope that was a well-padded envelope. 😄 It's possible that he might have issues finding a watch tech to do repairs. After all, the line is unique in design. Anyway, I did ask that question as a fan of Marc and the brand, and it's good to know that he's willing to go that far to help.

Sounds just a quick crown replacement which can be a good practice 🤔… how much to for the shipping to CT? It has an NH35 movement right?

Ok just making sure what type of stem is needed just in case need a new stem for it as well

·

That should have been an easy fix for Mark. It sounds like if the crown is broken then it can't be removed from the stem. It sounds like he could have just replaced the crown and stem. It was probably more cost effective just to send you a new one.

·

Probably too late to take you up on this offer. There must be a way yo fix it.

·

Fun fact: if you own a breitling, you may face this issue as well. I have. Twice. The only reason it didn’t happen a third time is because I never acquired a third breitling. Lol. Marc is the man for sending you a replacement. THE man. And I will buy from him just because of that. Breitling told me to fk myself.

·

If a watchmaker has issue diagnosing or repairing this small issue. I would absolutely not use them for anything. There are good humble watchmakers out there, but there are also watchmakers that believe anything that is not Rolex is not worth their time, even if you're a paying customer.

·

Very easy fix, I was looking for an excuse to buy a crown press tool and this project would have been a great candidate if the issue was a ruined thread, but I am sure others can help you with this.

·

That is super cool I would love to have this watch even if it has an issue there always has to be a way to fix it if so

·

Late to the party… I’d swap the movement out.

Looks like it’s been snapped up…

Already sending it to an early bird 🙂

Maybe next time 😂

Such a generous offer! As someone who likes collecting shiny things, I'm tempted to ask for it, but I know that it isn't my style. I hope it goes to someone who can appreciate the watch. Whoever the lucky guy/gal is, they'll certainly remember your kindness for a really long time, if not their whole life.

Generosity is not always seen too much these days, so for that, I doff my backwards-facing baseball cap to you, good sir!

I have been on the receiving end of some very generous deals and gifts regarding watches. One day, I plan to give a lot of it away. I see it as paying forward my debt. One honest man gave me a good price on a watch when I was sixteen, so I'll find another sixteen-year-old and give him a good price on something one day.

We seldom realise it, but acts of kindness have a snowball effect and start a chain of good deeds, which is never a bad thing!

·

You have some lousy watchmakers in your area. I'm not a watchmaker, and I can fix that. Any competent watchmaker can.

Kinda my point actually. I’ve tried several places, they were either not interested (“naaaaah, we’re a Seiko service center here”) or just more used to changing batteries. 🤷‍♂️

·

Mark, Is legit, he gets it, he’s sent me extra bracelet screws, spring bars, and just answer questions. He is customer service and in a new weird world where most customer service is either an AI voice or chat box, Mark gives you the human touch. I really hope his products become extremely popular because he deserves to be very successful.

·

It's great that marc would just give you a free watch as a replacement and not even ask for the old one back. It's nice of you to also give away a broken watch instead of just chucking it in the trash. Some modder could probably have fun with it. ☺️

·

Wow that’s some amazing customer service! Your also very kind to give it away like that. I can’t be that hard to fix. Good luck whoever gets it I hope you post the finished product and what you do to fix it.

Yep, probably not a big job, but I know I won’t do it myself, mostly by lack of time. My head is just not there at this time.

The person I sent it to should post updates in the near future 🙂
