Looking for advice!

Hello fellow watch lovers! Five days ago I officially made my first watch blunder after succumbing to a moment of unprecedented impulsiveness. I purchased this Datejust 36 from Swiss Watch Expo online, because I was enamored with the dial and its funky, almost irreverent layout. I had never held a Datejust, and assumed the 36mm would be as perfect as my Smiths Everest 36. I have lately been wearing a Santos Caree almost non-stop, and have become quite accustomed to more vintage sizing. I need to sell this watch, and am looking for any wisdom about selling. I have never sold, and don't really want to deal with Chrono or Ebay since I have no history. Is there any hope of not taking a massive financial hit? This watch is absolutely mint, comes with box/card, and was just serviced by Swiss Watch Expo. I would be so grateful for feedback. Thank you!!

Is the issue that it's too big compared to another watch?

·

Yes, it just feels bulky to me, and has more high polish than I realized, which makes it look even bigger

·

Having no feedback is not an impediment to selling on C24 as there is no feedback system for private sellers.

As for taking a financial hit - impossible to know without knowing (a) what you paid and (b) the median sales price for this particular ref.

Good luck, whichever way you go.

·

You purchased it 5 days ago? Is it not eligible for return?

·

Yes, 5 days ago. Sadly, and perhaps stupidly, I removed the red tape that has to remain on the watch to be eligible for return. Swiss Watch Exp is totally uninterested in working with me on this since I didn't follow the rules. They won't even respond to me about the possibility of a trade. Steep learning curve for me :(

FWIW, even without history on Ebay, the watch should still fall under their Authentication Guarantee. That gives more confidence to potential buyers, regardless of your lack of selling history. At least that's been my experience. It's also been my experience that if you want to sell something quickly, be prepared to lose your shorts...

r/WatchExchange (Reddit) is my go-to marketplace for buying and selling. I think you may find it challenging to sell this particular piece there with no history or feedback.

Watchuseek is another great option, but you need to meet their minimum number of posts/comments to gain access to the selling channel.

You could sell to a retailer, like Hodinkee/Crown & Caliber, but they’re going to lowball you so they can resell it, of course.

Your best bet is likely Chrono24. No need for sales history, and there are lots of safeguards in place for the buyer and seller. And quite honestly, it’s probably the one marketplace that you will get close to what you paid.

Good luck with sales.

If your story is exactly as outlined, I'd think any reputable dealer would take the watch back. You'd pay for the return freight & some type of a 'restocking' fee.

I think you'd end up much better going this route. That is unless they try crushing you on the restocking. Worth a shot...?

You removed the TAPE?!?! How DARE you?!?! All jokes aside, we’ve all been there before. As others have stated, you don’t need any feedback for chrono24. I personally would just list it for what I paid for it. It’s a crazy dial, but it’s still a Rolex, so I can’t imagine it’s going to be too difficult to get most of your money back.

I once got a “good deal” on an Ebel Wave that I was planning to originally keep, but then when I decided to let it go, I was in for quite the shock when I found out how much value they loose and how little brand recognition they have in the U.S. anymore. Needless to say I took such a hit on it that I almost gave up watch collecting lol. 😆 it’s part of the hobby I guess… and also having this wild bi-polar depression that launches me into a mania of bad decisions at random 😅

No hassle my ass...

Is that a Petri dish dial?

I completely feel this, the modern OP and DJ are just big even at 36mm; I think the 34mm seems like a better option for people who are into vintage sizing.

Thanks so much for sharing! I feel pretty stupid about the whole thing, so it's nice to know I'm not alone in my moment of impulsiveness and lack of discernment...aka "mania of bad decisions at random"... love thatImage

Honestly, the fact that you haven’t sold yet means that you’re already doing better than 99% of us here 😂

I have no clue, just wanted to say

I hope you stay and join the 😁

I have no idea what to say to that dial except possibly “what?” I’m not sure why anybody would buy a Rolex with a dial that screams “I got this at Walmart”. I have no problem with pink watches I have no problem with very feminine watches but this face makes the whole thing look cheap.

Chrono 24 should be a good option. If you are in a rush to sell, obviously there is a chance you might take a bit of a hit unless you bought for cheap
