My first vintage watch!! And for 5$: A review

https://youtu.be/k4eIUPq6A_8

I have always wanted to find a watch an estate sale but it is not something that I have ever actually looked out for. One day when heading to the gym I saw a sign for an estate sale and took a detour to check it out. I went specially looking for watches but was pretty confident that I wouldn’t find anything period as that’s a long shot. If I did have something cool surly it would have been picked up earlier in the morning and surly it would be priced much higher than the few dollars I had in my wallet as I don’t carry cash. We rolled up to the house and for my first estate sale it was exactly what I wanted to see. A shagg red carpet thick enough to please Austin powers, giant Buddha statutes laid about the rooms, Samurai swords on the walls, and toasters from the 1960s; which ashen I think this house was last updated. I found the whole thing hilarious but I was there for one reason and didn’t need any silly nicknacks. I walked over to a table and saw a few watches to my surprise. A few quartz seikos, some female Waltham watches, and this manual wind Bernhuf annual calendar. I didn’t know about the brand but surly the complication was reason enough to be interested.

I flipped the watch around and it was listed for a price of just 5 dollars. I wound it up and that second hand began to beat nice and smooth. I didn’t really have a choice in the matter I knew I had to get it.

Turns out the brand was wiped out by the quartz crisis but these movements were used by a few different brands. I found two examples of close watches in worst condition listed for over 1k. the dial was beautiful with some patina but over all very clean. All the complications worked but it originally came on one of those extendable elastic straps which look pretty outdated. It was exceptionally comfortable more so than I’d like to admit but it didn’t look that cool so I swapped it out for a red leather that accented the second hand.

A lot of people would consider this watch too small as it measures at 30mm but I am a fairly large human and it fits my wrist just fine. I would not wear a modern watch this small but with something vintage you can pull it off. Overall this watch is really cool especially for the price I paid. Let me know what you think

Nice find. PS you don’t have to break quick release spring bars to remove them. Look for videos on that.

And I dug the look of the original strap, though its elastic may not be reliable now.

Thank you and thanks for taking the time to check out the videos! Haha yeah I probably should have looked that up before I broke them but I got impatient. I held onto the original strap so I might end up going back and forth

Thank you! It definitely makes me want to frequent more estate sales and shows you that if this is out there I can only imagine what else is too. Wish that dial said Patek on it 😂 probably would have fainted
