commented on IWC Ingenieur: What have they done? ·

There are rumors that IWC may announce a return the Genta-styled Ingenieur at W&W 2022 in a couple of weeks.  Who knows if it's true, but IWC has no doubt lived to regret its decision to abandon the Genta-based design in 2017--the exact point in time when the market for integrated bracelet steel watches exploded.  There's a great chain on WUS listing all of the integrated steel sports watches out now, there are like 30 of them now.

The sad thing is that IWC has real historical chops, being one of the trio of watches actually designed by Genta.  Dropping that design in 2017 was like the guy at Excite who turned down the offer to buy Google in 1999 for $750k.

commented on Just got my hands on a Squale for the first time, pretty impressed with it, but I've heard a lot of people dislike the brand. What's everyone's thoughts on the main pros and cons on Squale watches? ·

I don't think Squale deserves the hate, but it's out there.  A few reasons:

  1. Over the past few years, many were turned off by the endless pumping of the Squale brand through TGV/Urban Gentry and other YouTubers, which was nonstop on YT for several years. Sponsoring YouTubers to pump your brand is good for short term sales, but death for your image as a luxury/prestige brand among actual enthusiasts and collectors.
  2. They oversold and exaggerated their supposed history and pedigree in dive watch history; they were primarily known as a contract manufacturer of dive watch cases. And there are lots of reports that their dive watch cases today, which is really the only thing that's entirely unique to their watches, are made in China.
  3. A lot of hate comes from people who claim that Squale is just a maker of Rolex homages. But most of their designs don't look that much like Rolex pieces and have distinct design elements (like the 4:00 crown). I would not place Squale in the same bucket as Steinhart or similar companies that make fairly shameless Rolex knockoffs.
commented on Which one would you get? ·

I actually own both of these exact same watches.  They are fundamentally different watches, both of them great, very difficult to choose between them.

So for me the exercise is, if I had to keep just one of them and was forced to sell the other, which one would go?  I'd keep the BB58 and sell the Aqua Terra 38mm.  Make no mistake, the Aqua Terra is a phenomenal piece, with better finishing than the BB58 by a country mile. It's far more striking than the BB58, especially with that blue dial, and many would argue that the Omega 8800 Coaxial is the better movement than the in-house Tudor.

But the BB58 is simply a magical piece, there's absolutely nothing on the market like it, with its combination of vintage aesthetics/pedigree, absolutely perfect dimensions (the diameter and thickness are near identical to the classic five-digit Submariner no date), perfect dial symmetry (no date!), modern movement with a great power reserve, etc. But putting all of the boring specs aside, the BB58 is a slow burner -- the more you wear it, the more it starts to get under your skin and you start to appreciate how well it comes together as a complete package.

Hard to pick a favorite.  But I really like this blue Breitling Transocean 38mm.

commented on Why wouldn’t you buy Tudor Black Bay 41 ·

I used to own this watch. It's a very nice piece, but my biggest gripe was that the dial was too reminiscent of the Black Bay dive watch. It looks like a scaled down version of the diver, rather than a watch having its own unique character. The crystal is also annoyingly flat (with zero dome) that is a glare magnet. Yeah, I know, Rolex crystals are flat like that also, but the Black Bay dive watch has such a nicer dome to its crystal.

If you want a 41mm Tudor that's not a diver, I'd consider the recently-discontinued 41mm Tudor Ranger, I think it has more of that classic Tudor DNA (including the Tudor rose on the dial) without looking like a "discount" Black Bay dive watch.
