NWA: IWC Pilot Mark XV

I recently sold my IWC Mark XVIII for something rather special. This is the IWC Mark XV, which is regarded as the last ‘true’ Mark due to the original style hands found on the earlier RAF models.

I’ve always had a love for the IWC Pilot watches and until recently owned both a Mark XVIII and Spitfire Chronograph.

Unfortunately I noticed how I stopped wearing the Mark XVIII since getting the chrono. This was due to the fact that when I want to wear a big bulky pilot watch, the chrono was the one I reach for.

I tried different straps, tried on the new Mark XX, but it still wasn’t what I was looking for.

That was until I came across a Mark XV locally in almost NOS condition and having had a full revision by IWC very recently. The dimensions at 38mm diameter with a thickness of 9mm and lug to lug of 47mm wear so much better on my wrist and look killer on a nato. I also prefer the way IWC still reworked their ETA based models rather heavily in those days. Next week I’m also picking up the classic ‘Pyramid’ bracelet to go with it!

I’m extremely happy with my purchase and am keen to hear whether you guys would have done the same?

You made your decision based on logic and instinct.  I would like to think I am smart enough to do the same and control my impulse to buy based on nonsense.

Great pickup. I love the look of the Mark XVIII, but it just didn’t feel right on my wrist. I much prefer the dimensions of the XV.

I still need to try on the Tudor Ranger but leaning toward buying that over an IWC pilot, in part due to dimensions.

...in a heartbeat. One of the best everyday watches out there in my opinion. I've been looking for one for a while now. Are you going with a new "replacement" bracelet from IWC, or did you find a vintage one?

I went the used route for the bracelet, really was difficult to find one but I eventually did! IWC does not sell this bracelet reference anymore as far as I could find out.
