An introduction

I've had numerous watches all my life from since I was a kid. I do find them quite interesting and enjoy watching youtube videos about the different types. I quite like 'Ben's watches'. The trouble is I can't seem to find a watch to settle on. I paid £80 for a watch at an antique fair (seiko). That had a problem with it and I now think I've wrecked it by trying to replace the battery wrongly. I also bought another bad watch at an antique fair with guitar shaped hands. That was just rubbish. Now I've got another watch from an antique fair a sekonda which is quite good. However the facia sometimes makes it difficult to tell the time. I'm thinking of getting a £10 casio from Amazon. I think it would be better than the £8 watch (Sekonda) I have now. It seems like it's thrice bitten four times shy.

Firstly, welcome to the Crunch! Secondly, buying used or vintage watches is a minefield if you do not know what to look out for. One of our regular contributors wrote quite a lengthy post on how to do it successfully. If I can find it, I shall link to it here. Don't give up, there is a lot of fun to be had collecting watches.

Actually. it is a series of posts written by @Porthole . highly recommended reading for you!

I'm not intending to buy from an antique fair again. Bad mistake on my part. Thanks for the welcome.

I support the Casio F-91W idea. Buying used from resellers that don't really know watches is the blind leading the blind.

A series of unfortunate events. Welcome to WC. I’m sure this community can point you to something that suits all of your needs.

Welcome to WC! You'll never go wrong with a Casio 🍻

Welcome to the watch fam 🙂🤝!

I’d be curious to know more about what went wrong with vintage. I’d rather dispel any negative connotations you have regarding that and maybe help you get some closure than recommend anything new.

You buy the seller, not the watch…

I've seen reviews on youtube saying the casio f-91w is good. You are right big mistake by from antique fair.

Let's hope so. Mind you there is something of the anorak in me that just likes exploring all the options for exploring's sake.

From what I've seen on youtube I think Casio are one of the best watch makers out there.

As I've said; I just made mistakes that's all. No thought went into what I was doing.

Welcome! Hopefully you can find all your answers here without getting too deep down the rabbit hole!

I quite like going down the watch rabbit hole

Sounds like you need to ease off junk at 'antique' fairs and buy yourself a nice, new watch that looks exactly like you want, and has all the features you want. Maybe it's that Casio, maybe it's something else. Much better than throwing money at used rubbish. Lots of suggestions on this forum. Good luck!

Thanks. I've got my eye on a casio lineage at the moment

I'm going to buy new next time

Ok great… I’m still none the wiser as to what went wrong, so there is little I can add to help you.

The watch I bought from the watch fair was a seiko chronograph. It only worked when one of the buttons was out. I think I've wrecked it now whilst trying to change the battery. The watch with guitar hands was just rubbish. I thinking of getting a casio lineage. Even that looks like a minefield. So many to chose from but Ben's watches recommends it. And I like lots of buttons.

·

Welcome Tim!

Don't rush and don't be affraid about make mistakes. Everyone here on WC made some.

About the Seiko, I think it's hard that you managed to screw it up just by trying to change the battery. My humble advice is to take it to a watchmaker for an inspection and hopefully get your watch back.

·

The seiko is old and it isn't really worth trying to get it fixed. It was annoying because it only worked with one of the push buttons pulled out. I was never really a big fan of it. I also don't want to throw good money after bad. I paid £80 for it at an antiques fair. Why did I do that. I'm trying to become more watch savey.

·

A £10 Casio sounds like a solid choice, welcome to WC!

·

I've seen a watch by Soki for £11 on amazon. It might be the way forward but you know I think I can afford something better. I might even get one of those radio controlled watches. But I'm not sure it's a gimmick. Thanks for the welcome.
