What's the watch you own the Watch Community Hates?

I was gifted this Luminox UVP by a friend I call a brother. The Midwest Boy I am graciously thanked him for thinking of me with a gift. Luminox IMO is not a loved brand in the Watch Collecting Community. Why the hate? Just a few solid reasons: Dubious claims of connections to the SEAL Community & the 200 Meters of Water Resistance topped off with a push in crown that doesn't seem to meet DOD/MILSPEC standards elite fighting units would be looking for 🙄. I pulled out that non-screwdown crown and left the watch sitting a solid year. I thought about putting the watch up for auction with @Mr.Dee.Bater . Side Note: if you have a watch you want to donate for charity Brian makes giving a simple & amazing experience! I felt as jacked giving a watch away as I do getting something new - actually more jacked. Anyway, I decided to tune into some gratitude and try this gift on. 💥BOOM! I got ah beater I love!

What's to love? Let's be honest, it was free. If this watch gets wrecked working, camping, hiking, swimming etc. I'm good. When I first started wearing the watch I would angrily get it muddy, trek through brush just looking to prove it was sh_t! Like Jeremy Clarkson throwing a Z06 into a few corners Fun Reference Video https://youtu.be/Ko9kzyqW-l8 . I discovered the Tritium Lume is awesome. The soft rubber strap is so comfortable I wonder why other brands haven't discovered something close or equal. The Carbonox plastic case is lightweight. Quartz accuracy can't be hated. I have nothing else with a Yellow Dial. Bottom Line : it's a killer beater!

Things not to love: The Bezel is plastic so don't expect tactile feedback aka pleasure. Yes, I am aware of how that reads. The lume on the bezel pip is ... just horrible. I have taken my share of grief wearing this watch. Of course I take sh_t from Veteran Friends who wonder WTF ? It's one thing for Omega to tout the Speedie decades after the last Moon Landing because Omega has EVA & Moonwalk pictures. There's no pictures of DEVGRU saving Private Lynch or taking down Binladen wearing a Luminox. Most of the guys who trash talk me catch the yellow dial before drinking that next beer that sends them into an official "Overserved " status. They are not watch collectors or even watch aware. They know to trash on the brand. It's cool! I now welcome the trash talk. I feel let down when the verbal trashing doesn't materialize. Sometimes I wear the watch around my friend just to get their buttons pushed. This watch is a new sub-addiction in collecting ! 😆

Please share your watch that the Watch Collecting Community hates but you happily wear.

I don't think I have any watches that are hated. I mean, I have a bunch of fake watches, but those are always fun as conversation starters - everyone loves to oooh and aaah over fakes... "Wow, it feels so heavy, it could be real!"

Image

Maybe the closest I have is the King Seiko SPB279.

Image

All the reviewers love dunking on it for having the lowly 6R31 movement in it. Cue the typical review, "I can't help but feel that Seiko let us down with the movement... It should be a call back to the history of rivalry between King Seiko and Grand Seiko. The least they could have done is put in the 8L35 movement."

Weirdly, my KS is running about +1 SPD. Whatever. I'm typically +/- 3 minutes relative to my schedule anyway!

I do hear trash talk about the movement but the KS is loved. I waffle on buying one. Do I spend the same $ on something else? 🤔 My MM300 is a block od steel that gets shade for being a block of steel. The 8L35B movement in that watch is awesome.

Ha!

If you ever really do want a KS and want the SPB279, let me know, and I'd be happy to do a trade or something interesting. After owning it for a year or whatever, I can't help but feel that Seiko let us down with the movement... It should be a call back to the history of rivalry between King Seiko and Grand Seiko. Nah, just joking about the movement. But, I am serious about a trade or something fun. Gotta keep things fresh and new in my collection!

I am vibing you need something Swiss or German to offset all of Japan's finest.

I'll have to get a wrist shot when I'm home, but any one of these "monsters", prolly make purist's/enthusiasts' eyes twitch due to their diameter, especially when on my definitely under 7" wrist. Especially the Capt. America Shield, aka the Bombfrog ABC.

Haters gonna hate, occasionally I like big watches an' I cannot lie...🤪🤘🏻🤙🏻😎

More informed on this well known (infamous?) brand thanks to your great post, buddy! Although I don’t own a Luminox, their colorful dial aesthetics always appealed to me - then another Gshock gets purchased 😝

Anyway, I agree it’s a solid watch with some warranted merits and hey, free is everyone’s favorite “F” word! 🤙❤️

LOL you know it! 🤣 These pieces go on sale for a couple hundred bucks. It's worth something different if you want a colorful beater

I don’t think anyone I know likes this watch but love wearing it.

I've never seen it before. Kind of a Panerai vibe

Dude - embarrassed to say I bought this myself - but it glows in the dark 😬

Enjoyed the ?musical? reference. Isn't there another song titled approximately What's Size Got To Do With It? I have a 7-inch wrist and have a watch range from 34mm to 45. My little 34mm dress watch has no need to be any larger, and the 45mm Chrono has a lot of info on its dial so it needs to be a great big watch.

No, no embarrassment - I would have a Luminox myself except I think they're overpriced. They are plastic which is right for a watch like this, and they don't have stellar specs, but that should bring their prices down.

I would rather have a black one, but now I don't know. Yours is a great looking watch.

It's free and it's worth it. Although I would buy a Luminox with my own money if they weren't asking for so much of my own money. In other words, they seem overpriced.

It sits in my watch box waiting for me to rediscover it. I think it was the tritium wot swung it. Can’t comment on the case construction and Carbonite, reminds me of the Ceramic plastic bollocks on the Moon Swatch - it’s fancy plastic. @TimeJunkie is right about the rubber strap though, it’s super comfy to wear 👍

Dude! Don't be embarrassed. I am now a true believer. Like Tom Cruise and Scientology ! That orange dial looks suck!

I'd buy a Victornox over a Moonswatch any day of the week

Starting right now, I'm going to start using your term "fancy plastic" instead of carbonite, or "environmental ceramic whatever" to refer to . . . uhh . . . fancy plastic watch cases.

Have you copyrighted this? I'll have my people call your people.

Can you imagine the Moon Swatch marketing if they changed it to ‘Fancy Plastic’ 😂😂😂

It would be honest marketing.

I got an original 3000 series Navy SEAL Luminox for around $185. This one does have a screw-down crown, though. I like it, but don't wear it very often. It's got 43mm case, so it doesn't wear as unwieldy as some of the others in the 45+ size. Only thing that gets me is the seconds hand doesn't line up on ANY of the indices. I'd expect a little more from a Swiss quartz, but after all it is just a Ronda.

I never thought I'd like mine as much as I do. I don't wear it a lot. I wear it in little stretches of three days and then pick it up a month later

·

Nothing to hate. Love the bright colour.

Wear it like a navy seal and put it through the test. LOL 💪

I have the orange one on stainless steel, I don’t actually see anything wrong with it?

I’m confused as to why the watch community doesn’t like this watch. For me, this model comes with a milled clasp, with a signed secured clip for the secure portion after you snap it closed. The bracelet is very nice for this price point, I paid $189 for it. The lume is ok, but honestly I’m not going diving anymore, used to, but not now. The lume pip is blah, but I’m just glad it glows somewhat; some watches don’t even have them anymore. The bezel is plastic, but boy does it sound and click great. The dial catches the light really well, the seconds markers hit each marker straight on with that Ronda movement, and the crown is screw down; does it feel a little flimsy, a bit, but I’m not really unscrewing it that often because it’s quartz. Lastly, it has 3 adjust holes on the clasp, which made it fit perfectly after taking my usual 3 links out.

So all in all, for me, this Luminox is a winner! I’ve seen a lot of other models of Luminox and some of them look like toys for kids, but this one feels and looks like a manly watch in my opinion.

What do you think?

I think that the watch world has bashed on Luminox for their SEAL claims and plastic cases the most. As posted, I love my watch and it is tough as nails
