Friday Flieger Question

Why don’t fliegers have a higher water resistance? It seems a majority are 30 or 50 meters. Simple answer, you’re not submerged in the sky.

Living near the Great Lakes, there’s a few planes that make unplanned water landings… of course that’s an odd occurrence.

I suppose in the era of WW2 fighter pilots, extreme water resistance wasn’t achievable. I still think it’d be interesting to have insane water resistance on a pilots watch. Perhaps even a helium escape valve. So when i hypothetically plunge my imaginary fighter jet into the sea, or press the eject button over an ocean; my watch will still be working.

I think they take the view that if you're a pilot and suddenly require your watch to work in water then the time probably isn't your primary concern anymore

Sure it’s not the primary concern, but why add another problem? Plus, watches can be used as a rough navigation tool, if working.

What about a pilot who works from a carrier ship? Do you wear a diver, because ocean; or a flieger because pilot? I know the answer is G Shock, don’t say it…😂

A sea captain goes down with his ship and a pilot goes down with his watch.😂

I see your point though why not add more WR…

The solution is simple. Standard issue Breitling Emergency

That’s a pretty amazing piece, but it’s still only rated to 50 meters. Not sure if the beacon would work after the circuitry was wet.

The real answer is, 50m WR is more than enough to swim and be in the water.

Ridiculous WR ratings are a result of spec chasing, but essentially amount to increased cost for no realistic return.

If you actually want a pilot's watch with good WR, get a Damasko DS30, or Sinn 556. Both have 200m WR, though the Damasko does it at just under 10mm thick.

If you want a modern interpretation with plenty of water resistance, check the Islander Hawkeye

Thanks for joining in Captain Buzzkill… 😉

When I pretend I’m shot down during a Dogfight in the Pacific theatre, my plane is sure to plunge beyond 50 meters.

Of course it’s ridiculous. That’s the fun part… Damasko does make a damn fine watch, I’ll give you that.

Marc has a version of everything. It’s like he reads the comments about a watch, fixes the complaint and starts printing money.

So I guess your pretending to be a free diver too! 😂🤣cuz most humans won't make it back up from 50 meters.

Pilots were all officers and getting wet was beneath them. The wet ones were called Bob because that's the only thing they did in the water. Watches were legible at a quick glance to keep them from being bob.

Pull up, Captain Mitty!!

My two IWCs have 100m and 60m. I can wash my hands or crash my flight simulator into the ocean without worry

I did a simulator at Kalamazoo Air Zoo that was nuts. They lock you into this egg that moves around with the stick. So if you barrel roll, you actually barrel roll.

HEV?????

Do you even understand how Helium Escape Valves are actually used?

HEVs are for saturation divers, i.e. divers that live deep underwater for days or weeks at a time and breathe helium. About as far from a pilot as one could possibly get.
