Man dies after being ‘attacked with a hammer for his Rolex’

RIP to the victim. I'm glad I'm too cheap to afford one.

I can't imagine being killed over a watch.

My sincere condolences to their family. I'm not sure what the laws are where the person was murdered, but I would hope this is another lesson on why it's important to educate yourself on operating a firearm safely. And maintaining a concealed carry permit, and arming themselves daily. Regardless of being a watch collector or not. Maintaining your family and your own safety should be 1st and foremost for most individuals, so I'm hoping it's possible for most of those out there. For those who can't partake in owning a firearm or small armory, I'm truly sorry

wow , thats only 20mins drive away from me. I wear my nice things in the city center and have never had any trouble to be honest.

Luckily for me I don’t live in an expensive area. At one time no pun intended it was the richest city in the world due to the whaling population. But now it’s considered to be the #1 Commercial Fishing Port. Most here don’t tend to flaunt their wealth it’s your typical mid working class types.

Salt of the earth people as I call them 😉

I mean it does make me think twice, but tbh I am very sensible , if I was going to wear anything flashy , I am defo taking my Casio to wear on the journey and then changing when I arrive, I would also never weer anything nice at a place I have never visited.

I think that people just get comfortable sometimes and forget about the above considerations.

The chap may have worn that watch all the time with no hassle , he may have even known a few local folks and assumed he would never have any trouble with people as birmingham is a pretty friendly place.

But the old phrase better safe than sorry goes a long way.

Something to consider. Being a licensed gun owner and being taught how to use it in the safe environs of a gun range does not give you the skills or the guts to use it in a real life threatening situation.

And that's why you go to the range. But training sure does, easily accessible through your local tactics supplier or some firing ranges also offer it. And "guts"? Well, I suppose not everyone's cut from the same jib.. That's where natural selection slides in..

Hmm, natural selection huh? I guarantee you've never had to use firearms for real.

I won't even wear a Rolex homage. Idiots think everything is a "Rolex" I've had people ask me if my Seiko TURTLE is a Rolex!

Two women die every week in the UK due to domestic violence, so it's more dangerous being a female than owning a Rolex.

5 people die every day in car accidents in the UK.

Put into context I think Rolex wearing is one of the safer things you can do.

We can't carry guns in the UK, but we also never have mass school shootings, so.... swings and roundabouts...

I really don’t think firearms are the solution to this problem.

Wait two women each week? That is a horrifying statistic in this day and age

It evens the playing field. It's worked in the past and tends to work more often than not.

School shootings are awful of course, always a tragedy. Though they would never outweigh gun ownership. In the same sense, we also have many fewer terrorist acts in our country due to being the 3rd largest standing militia on the planet. I suppose that pendulates back.. To each their own, and that's why I live here and you live there 🙂

Well.... You were the target of the most deadly terrorist attack in recent history and the 30th most impacted country by terrorism using the terrorism index, well above any other western country, and by it's very nature guns can't help against most acts of terrorism.

Also, we Brits don't need guns to protect us from terrorists...

As you say, to each there own my friend. Take care out there and may you and your family stay safe 🍻

I suppose it's a hard pill to swallow given the victim rate to survivor rate, in comparison here. I forget the UK's tiny population and how that can get confused over there.. I'm sorry you have to deal with that all, stay safe! https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2017/07/10/europe-terror-problem-united-states-isis/463554001/

Robbing, stealing and killing people to steal is something of all times....it was so thousands of years ago and sadly will always be so.

That this case involves a Rolex is of course no reason to panic, at the end of the day there are millions and millions of people on this planet who wear a Rolex.

Wear and enjoy your Rolex (or other luxury watch) and just use common sense when wearing it.

As someone said already above, the chances of dying in a car accident are much more likely than dying from an armed robbery.

I'm old enough to remember guys getting whacked for their boom box and their sneakers. Particularly in city life one's situational awareness and ongoing real time threat assessments should be an ingrained part of how one rolls period. When in doubt, don't flash about. BTW I frequently wear a Day-Date at posh events in L.A. but not recklessly on the streets. It does result in me being a little more diligent with keeping my head on a swivel and tbh I don't get as loose and carefree as maybe I would've otherwise but Hey & Whohoo I'm wearing a Day-Date!

·

Based on being killed for what other reason?

Watch / wallet / car / women etc etc statistically you have a considerably higher chance of being killed driving a car. Any murder of an innocent is horrific.

Carrying or owning a firearm makes you objectively less safe. I understand gun ownership, I own one. But I don't fool myself that I'm making myself more safe because of the gun.

Every gun owner thinks they are the exception, "*I* know how to use my gun, I would never have an accident, I would never have my gun used against myself, no one close to me would ever use my gun to kill themselves." But in reality, the objective facts are clear that having guns around you makes you less safe.

I understand you don't want it to be true, but it is nevertheless true. The world would be a better place if people wouldn't substitute their feelings for the facts.

Study after study, data upon data has shown, for example, you're more likely to have your own gun used against you than you are to use it against someone else in self defense. Gun owners are also much much more likely to commit suicide because of easy access to their firearm.

Unfortunately for you, it's not, though I tell with all your feelz you wish it was... And I couldn't agree more, the world would be a better place if people wouldn't substitute their feelings for the facts." Imagine arguing someone's rights 🤣 (waiting for that TIME article 😂)

And your gun being used against you might be a reality, but I wouldn't speak for everyone. A quick remedy to that is a canted holster or a friction-fit concealed holster 😉 Some light reading may help you learn more about gun safety.

But just like cars, we all get our licenses and "know" how to drive, yet people die daily due to improper use or improper use by others. It's the nature of the beast, but we all take that risk each day, either as a passenger or drivers. Just as licensed drivers use their car to suffocate themselves with the exhaust or drive off a bridge.. It's all about proper safety.

Don't allow your fear of something you know nothing about to deter you from educating yourself on the subject. Best of Luck!

I'm sorry... can you elaborate on what your 2017 article set to show me? And what I'm confused about?

Is it this bit...?

There were 100 attacks that killed 97 people in the U.S. in 2015-2016, compared to 604 attacks that claimed 383 victims in Western Europe

You do know the UK isn't the entirety of Western Europe don't you?

And can you show me the data that article references, because they don't include it.

But here's an interesting graph from Wikipedia...

Image

The USA is sadly and surprisingly above Iran and Israel!

I can understand why you feel unsafe enough to carry a gun. 🙏

Anyway, I'm going to have to mute this conversation now because it's gone quite a distance from watch chat 😂

I don't really want to spend time on a watch forum talking about this, so I'm muting this thread. What the hell is going on in the comments? Yea, freedom of speech and all, but damn. Guns are bad. Why don't Americans understand? This article is from the UK, too. Dude's just spewing nonsense because he wants his agenda to be heard without necessarily contributing in a decent way.
