If this line of watches existed would you buy it? Part 2

Now the brand in question is Invicta. Please hear me out I have nothing against the Company or those that own and wear them I have Invicta watches. My problem with them and this is a subjective opinion they make too many gaudy watches some I’m guilty of owning. So why am I now saying this simple I can’t go on a watch forum where Invicta gets brought up and 99.99999% of the time it’s usually negative.

Me personally 80-95% of the Invicta’s I own never see wrist time I do have a few I’m not embarrassed wearing but most of what’s being made is 50+mm with chains and cables or ridiculous designs like skulls or spiders etc.

But there was a time say 15 or so years ago they actually did decent watches like COSC movements, Gemstone bezels, Swiss automatic Chronographs with ETA movements and Mechanical dress watches etc but we need to go back to the 1950s-1970s before the current owners took over. Then one day they, went big more like dinner plate big and seemed to stop caring. Maybe just maybe if Invicta took the time and hired an actual designer who didn’t design watches like a 4 year old, and actually (Parton my language) gave a crap and made real decent watches people would be proud to wear they would no longer be a laughing stock. I’ve never in my life seen any Invicta watches in the wild and we all know the reason. Please don’t let my rant stop you from wearing and buying them. I believe Invicta has started and got a lot of collectors into the hobby. I just want to see if they can actually do something higher end that’s not gaudy and huge.

Here are some examples of Invicta models before the current owners took over Id love to see in upscale versions.

Now just think for a sec that these models ^ pictured above had precious metal cases, decorative movements and upscale finishing.

I knew where you were heading with your original post. Like you said, many watch enthusiasts started with them and they still have some decent looking homages in the lineup. They are fine when steeply discounted and folks should absolutely enjoy the heck out of them.

The current company has nothing to do with the original. The historic Invicta went out of business in the early 70s, like many brands, due to quartz revolution. An investment company more or less relaunched the brand in 91 and turned it into the brand we know. Similar to other brands bought or newfound heritage brands is tough to argue as authentic in most cases. Whether that matters is a personal take.

I don’t think they’ll ever be an enthusiast favorite because; A) The original company wasn’t popular or innovative. B) Like Movado, the sustained tarnishing of the brand for 30+ years isn’t going to be forgotten.

Took the words right out of my mouth couldn’t have said it better. It’s a real shame if they just continued doing what they were doing those 15+ years ago who knows where they’d be?

This is the Invicta I would buy:

This is the Invicta they want to be and probably makes them tons of money.

Personally if they don't get rid of the bad. They will continue to turn off watch people. My issue with invicta is their MSRP vs their actual pricing seems scummy to me.

Invicta was never my cup of tea, but damnnn the early models you posted actually look really nice!

·

When you spend $5-20K on a watch, a fair portion of that money is going toward the brand name. People don't like to say that for some reason, but it's the reality of luxury products.

Invicta could regain some prestige, but it would have to essentially start over again from the bottom. Since they have a viable market now, and are part of a watch group that includes Glycine, it is unlikely in the extreme that they will ever "move up" the ladder. If the Invicta Group wanted to move a brand up market, they would likely choose Glycine, as it has less baggage.

If that skull one cost the same as a pro diver (50-75 usd) I'd totally get one

·

I my like my pro diver and totally would consider a 1953 or one of those Daytona looking ones, but I don't know if I would spend more than 100 bucks on an Invicta. Someone I work with tends to wear some of the slightly bolder Invicta watches and they look kinda cool. I've yet to see some of the really wild ones on someone's wrist.

·

Invicta used to be a respected brand then went belly up. The name was bought and they started marketing cheap Chinese (I believe) watches under the Invicta name, but the only thing similar is the name. This turned out to be successful marketing.

I have nothing against the brand and have several in my collection. I just added another that I found at TJ Maxx as it was just too cool to pass up.

They have a "vintage" line that tries to invoke their history, but have some odd sizing choices:

These are 44mm

This retro "surfboard" chrono is 43mm

They also do stuff like this:

The Vintage line is probably the only watches I’d wear without feeling bad about. I have a few not bad for what they are.

Sales are where Invicta are going with their broad range of watches. They touch every corner of the budget market with mostly Japanese powered products. You can get the really cheap Chinese ones too as well as the Selita powered ones to claim the Swiss wording on their dial. They are claiming their place in the market one NH35 at a time.

·

I like the triple date with the green & red poop emoji.

·

I've seen one or two vintage Invictas for sale near me and they really are quite good-looking. You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain. Invicta did both. Died in the 70s, and some necromancy later we have modern Invicta.

·

That is a nice Bulova Surfboard...but it says Invicta on the dial.

·

Their selection is huge. There are truly some good watches that they still make. I have the below and they are decent.
