Did you happen to hit both the reset and start/stop at the same time? There is usually a series of pushes (hold both down and then hit the start/stop to move it to a set position. Find the manual or youtube vid for your specific one for the exact instructions.
My father-in-law had this issue on his. I searched online and saw that, at least on his watch, it was possible to reset the chrono dials (and second hand) manually by holding down the chromo-start and reset buttons for around 5 seconds. This put the watch into "reset" mode, after which it was possible to press the chrono-start button to send the chrono-seconds hand round the dial and manually work it back to 12. This fixed the issue.
There are YouTubes on how to reset chronographs of various types, though I've no idea why it happens in the first place. Maybe one of the videos will tell all.
You can reset the hands on quartz. There are instructions from Casio online. Look for videos on YouTube, they are clearer than the instructions from Casio.

That might only work on quartz though.

WatchBee is correct, just recalibrate like he suggests
There's a great video from Mark and Long Island watch, which goes through different models and how to reset them. It's usually pretty straightforward.
Easy reset to do. This often happens after a battery change.
