Which Seiko to keep?

Like many can relate to, I came into this hobby through Seiko. Yet despite owning and wearing more expensive watches regularly now, I haven’t been able to break the habit of buying every cool Seiko I see!

For the new year I’ve vowed to only keep one of my current three: SPB143, SPB313, SSK005. For a little more context I’ve written my thoughts on each below:

SPB143: The endgame Seiko Diver (or so I thought). After multiple SKX, turtle and monsters, I saw this an instantly fell for it. And for at least 2 years it was perfect. But here’s the thing, I’m a bracelet guy and the bracelet on this watch is awful— especially the monster clasp. Also, my daily is a BB58 which almost takes the place of this watch in my current rotation.

SPB313: To me this was the quintessential expression of Seiko Diver design in a super wearable package. Originally I bought this to replace the 143 since it looked completely different.  The bracelet was not to my taste but that’s ok because it lIves almost exclusively on rubber, furthering the differentiation. But I do really like a bracelet and not having an option I liked was a bummer. Also the bezel insert was the one major flaw in my eyes. It just felt cheap and I wish it came with the brushed steel like on the 143, or even ceramic. Still, I think the design is perfect and the white dial always gets my attention.

SSK005: to be honest I was completely going to skip this watch if it were not for a 40% off sale at a department store. I will admit this watch is super fun, especially so in orange. It was reminiscent of my old, modded SKX and the GMT fiction added a nice flair to it. However, it also reminded me that I outgrew the SKX long ago and that it just wasn’t as comfortable on wrist as the smaller watches above. because of this I almost never reach for it in the morning. Crazy to think about how I used to lust after an orange SKX and now that it’s here, my interests seem to have changed. Maybe the Tag Heuer F1 is more my speed to scratch the orange itch?

So which to keep?

I'd keep the SPB143 and dump the rest. The SPB143 is a "nice" looking watch if you scrub the brand from the dial, the rest are pretty "meh".

Realistically, if your tastes no longer line up with Seiko sell them all. I bought one Seiko when starting, and I regret wasting my money... There is no need to own a Seiko, and frankly I think pushing new people toward them is doing the new enthusiasts a disservice.

I would keep the SPB143 no question. It’s my favorite Seiko in my collection. But that’s just my opinion.

·

Agree with gbelleh. Keep the 143. I love mine. I, too, have the BB58 and love it as well, but that 143 is just special.

·

Keep the 143.

Keep the SPB143

To be frank, it sounds like you’re ready to move past all 3. I say, consider dropping all 3 and find something you‘ll love not named Seiko... you can always admire the theses from afar and photos will last forever. If you must save one, I’d say the 143… it may have a lackluster bracelet, but it can literally go on any other band and you can keep your 58 exclusively on its bracelet.

#spb313 if you want to have one of the few #white dials in the #prospex collection. #spb143 for that total "endgame" #62mas aesthetic. Compared to those two, ditch the #ssk005. It's a Fisher Price "my first #gmt" compared to the other two. (I mean it's a nice watch but hardly in the same league)

I would keep the the SPB313, probably the most unique and distinct Seiko case design amongst the three.

·

I like the one with the white dial. No idea what Seiko animal and number that is though 🤷‍♂️

·

Since you are wearing more expensive pieces, if I were to only keep one, it would be the orange dial. Break it out occasionally for fun!

·

I'd say keep the SPB143 any day.

Probably the harsh, honest opinion I needed to hear.

Yeah I’m leaning towards to get rid of them all. And I probably wouldn’t bother with the Alpinist as my Hamilton khaki fits that role better for me

Yup. Definitely think this is what I’m most likely to do

If I may, I would recommend to keep an affordable diver in the collection. I often wear my SKX007 in summer, at beach, etc. A do-everything, go-anywhere non precious but still good looking watch is very useful 😋

I still have my modded SKX that sits on a shelf for that purpose. But tbh I’m the type of person who will take a “nice” watch to do not so nice things.

The 143 every day of the week. I would personally keep the orange one as well though.
