NH34a quickset issue. (Smooshed 0962 183)

I've noticed there are a few in the forums who have reported experiencing issues with the quickset no longer functioning on their NH34a after a short period of time. My too-cheap Tandorio has also been affected, and it no longer sets the date or advances the GMT hand. The general consensus seems to be that the culprit is the Day-Date corrector setting transmission wheel, specifically part number 0962 183. Interestingly, I have never encountered this issue with NH35/36/37 which also uses this part.

As it happens to be Sunday, I have done a quick tear-down of my watch to get to the keyless. After removing the faulty part, I discovered that the spring appears to be smooshed (a technical term). As a result, I have ordered another NH34 to see if it will work. Has anyone else experienced this issue? Also, does anyone have any advice on how to fix a smooshed spring? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have owned my PD with an NH34 movement for about a week. So far, so good. Can you be more specific on roughly how long it was before you noticed the problem?

I think that my problems are caused by me. Constantly changing hands and dials. I do that with NH35s and it is fine. I think if you do not mess with it, it should be ok. However in the forums, there seems to be a case of it working then a few days it no longer work. The thinking seems to be the GMT hand might be too much for the spring and causes it to fail prematurely. This is all speculation and since the movement is relatively cheap. I am ok with using the failed one for parts, or a no date NH37

ok, thanks for the reply. Maybe something maybe nothing. I will keep my eyes open.

All good. I have had 2 NH34. One I got from my regular supplier and made something for my brother in law and that one is behaving well. Another I got for myself from Tandario and that one I must have messed with it one too many times. So its 50/50 for me but if the next one behaves that it might be an small isolated batch perhaps.

Interesting, I only have NH35s and NH36s. While the day date corrector transmission wheel may be the part that broke, it may simply have been the weakest link. All of the problems I've had with date setting were related to too much pressure on the date indicator maintaining plate, usually due to an ill-fitting case.

I'm however not quite certain what you mean by smooched spring.

P.S.: I should clarify that "ill fitting case" could refer to a number of combinations that create too much pressure on the front of the movement, including overtightening the screws of the date indicator maintaining plate.

That is a thought. The Tandorio case was not the best fit. That is something I am going to look into. Thanks for that. So there is a spring that goes around the transmission wheel and under microscope it is bent out of shape. I do not know what it is supposed to look like so I cannot attempt to bend it back but I am ok with trying another NH34 movement to see if I get the same issue.

I have to admit that I hadn't looked at the transmission wheel under enough magnification to realize that there was a separate spring. I wonder how it would get bent, as the torque would impact the transmission wheel itself.

So my replacement NH34 came. It is not from Tandorio, but from my regular supplier of NH movements. It seems to be behaving properly. I have not actually stress-tested it but I did take off and put on multiple hands, this broke the one from Tandorio before. It also explains how it looks like a mish-mash of parts.

Hi all.

I recently had cause to change a calendar disk and date wheel on an NH36.

Suffice it to say, I managed to smoosh the 0962 183 wheel by putting the date corrector wheel in upside down and jiggling the crown gently to get it to engage. It was a very light jiggle but the spring on the wheel snapped.

So my question is ... Can anyone tell me where I can source one of them?

@Boondi Derek, at this point I think it might be cheaper and easier just to source the entire NH34. I have handled about 4-5 of these and seems that if you leave it as it is, it works fine. You open it up and look at it, that bit gets smooshed.

Hi there.

thanks for taking the time to reply. I have managed to source six of these at a decent price. As i understand it, the problem on Nh34 is that more grease is needed on cannon pinion, gmt wheel, setting lever/keyless works and stem. To much friction and smoosh.

for my problem, nh36 damaged by my stupidity. Was very tired and should have gone to bed. However, fitted day corrector wheel upside down, jiggled the crown, smooshed.....

parts arrived yesterday, so will give it a go as soon as I can be bothered as I jus t had an op on my shoulder that will take a bit to fully heal.

many thanks and best regards for future. ... Derek
