Invictas other brands

Given the disdain shown by many in the watch community towards Invicta and their homage heavy product range, I'm curious to discover your thoughts on their other brands and Glycine, in particular. Do you feel that Glycine are now worth considering as an entry into "Swiss" watches?

Glycine makes phenomenal watches. I own two, a Combat Sub GL0076 and an Airman DC-4 GL0217. They’re both easily the best bang for the buck watches that I own. I would happily recommend Glycine to anyone and everyone!

·

It's all about personal style. My only gripe with Invicta was the sheer sizes of the watches themselves. Glycine is kinda similar but I'm definitely a fan of their airman watches which sit in the more comfortable 40mm range.

·

The Combat Sub is an absolute bargain, in America especially so (you can't get one in Europe for anywhere near the price that people find them at in the States). But even at European prices they're well worth it. Rock solid, no bullshit tool divers.

The Invicta buyout definitely harmed their perception in the watch community, but Glycine were really struggling before the buyout, so I'd much rather have them owned by Invicta than them going bust.

And it must be said, Invicta has nothing to do with the production of Glycine watches, they are just the parent company.

It’s not really the homages that are the problem…

They haven’t ruined Glycine yet, but they are using their ridiculous pricing model.

Glycine is currently a very underrated brand but one that is steeped in history. The company was the first to come out with a GMT watch and their 24 hour dial Airman is iconic.

Their Combat divers watches can often be found on sale for the same price as Seiko 5s. And selecting a Glycine over a Seiko 5 is a no-brainer.

Invicta has pretty much let Glycine do its own thing since they acquired the brand. They are definitely worth buying.

Agreed on all points. Not to mention that the Combat Subs are under 11mm thick and sport a high beat SW200 to a Seiko 5’s 4R movement.

I really cannot argue with you there!

Haha oh dear! On that point though, it's worth noting that a Combat Sub would set you back almost a grand before the buyout, now the same watches made in the same factory (or perhaps more accurately "assembled" in the same factory at this price) cost about 1/3 of that.

That's the economies of scale that comes with a huge brand as your parent company I guess.

I get what you mean. For me personally 42mm is about as large a watch as I want to put on my wrist. Luckily they do have some in that size range.

I saw that as I was looking on the Invicta Europe website this afternoon

The Combat Sub wears smaller than its dimensions imo, thanks to the steep downturn at the lugs and the slim case (can't remember exactly but I'm sure it's under 11mm thick). Wears very well on an average wrist. Here's mine:

For sure, these are a couple of my favorites:

There is nothing inherently wrong with Glycine. At the same time I do not find the designs particularly inspiring. In fact, I have a higher opinion of Invicta, because that brand at least has the creativity (or audacity) to go where other brands don't. If there is a market for +50mm case diameter divers in bright colors, then I have to tip my hat towards Invicta for making it happen. Also, their marketing is incredibly effective, and people seem to buy more than one watch of that brand.

I do not see the same appeal with Glycine.

In an odd way, that is exactly Invictas appeal. It's like a velvet suit: It may be tacky, but it's also a lot of fun.

I think the fact that Invicta owns Glycine seems to be the only argument against Glycine, and it's not exactly a good argument. Glycine was ailing, and the IWG's purchase of it kept Glycine going. Yeah, you can see that some of their watches have that ridiculous "massive discount" tactic, which is probably a concession that Glycine had to make. However, owning two now - a Combat Sub 39 and an Airman No.1 - I can only say they still make great watches. Hell, they became more thoughtful than they were before being taken over by Invicta. Glycine's pre-IWG line-up had some absolutely horrid, viciously oversized and garish designs. Currently, they offer plenty of size options, which is great.

Putting it bluntly, I don't like Invicta. Invictas are, IMO, horrible through and through. However, I see no evidence of Invicta having had any negative impact on Glycine's design or quality.

To be honest, I haven't seen that issue on Glycines own website. Most definitely on the Invicta website, but not Glycine.

It seems like Invicta has left Glycine alone without any horrid carbuncle type watches. They have stayed true to the historic references and produced them at affordable prices.

The Combat Sub is a great entry-level Swiss dive watch and the Airman is also a great watch especially the "Pumpkin".

Here are some of the modern references in my collection...

I really like 2 of these watches, the Airman at the very top, and the vintage Chronograph. I guess I have very Conservative taste!

I own 3 Glycine watches. The fact Invicta purchased them is probably a net plus for the business side of the brand. Most Glycine enthusiasts who have been into the brand for a long time weren't thrilled but seem to admit that the "Invicta Stink" hasn't gotten onto the brand. My opinion, Glycine is probably the best entry level Swiss watch brand for quality to price ratio.

I'm not a fan of about 99%+ percent of Invicta watches but they have some legit gems in their line up. I received a Mickey Mouse watch as a father's day gift that features an NH35 movement and is every bit as good a quality watch as a Seiko 5 would be.

I am also more than satisfied with the NH35 watches that Invicta release. The same cannot be said when they use generic Chinese movements though. The whole build quality is noticeably cheaper. I am also in the "I really dislike their oversized and gaudy watches" camp.

Thé seiko 5 glycine combat sub thing is very interesting. I’ve always thought the combat sub to be more expensive. I can’t believe they are the same price.

Apparently before the Invicta buyout the Combat Sub could be had for around $1000. The fact that you can now pick up a watch with a Sellita movement for under $500 is testament to the stability a brand with the purchasing power that Invita has can bring.

The Airman at the top is the...

Glycine Airman Purist ref: GL0138 and I was able to find it brand new for $340 (List price $2,750)

The chronograph is a Glycine Camaro from the 1960s in pristine condition that I won at auction. I was definitely stoked when I won that one as they are somewhat rare since they run the Valjoux 72 manual chronograph movement. These are often purchased to salvage the movement to repair the significantly more valuable Rolex Daytona that uses that same movement.

Just to add my 2 cents. I've had my Airman for 4 yrs and it hasn't missed a beat. It's ETA movement has been keeping time at +2.7 s/d. Can't ask for much better than that from a sub $400 piece. Not to mention, sapphire crystal, screw-down crown, 100 m WR, presentation back (undecorated movement), beveled lugs. Great looking too!

Love that strap👌

With Seiko raising prices and glycine lowering. I don’t see a reason to risk a misaligned seiko vs the rock solid glycine with Swiss engine. Although Seiko is still king at lume.

·

Invicta bought Glycine and injected them with cash, esp for marketing. So far they’ve kept their promise that they made in 2016 to leave Glycine alone and manage themselves. Glycine has, and always will be a Swiss brand dating to 1914… with a lot more actual historic firsts than Rolex 😉

I’ve got a Glycine Airman Worldtimer (reference GL0195) and it’s an incredibly well made watch that I love to death

·

I don't dislike Invicta. In fact I own a Pro Diver anf find it to great value for money and extremely well built.

I am not an industry insider or monitor what Invicta is doing but I hope they keep the level of quality and style the Glycine has had in the past. This one is mine and it is pre-Invicta, as they say. I hope Invicta manages to wipe out this label of angst by their actions and actively listening to the Watch Community. There's room in the world for eye bleeding humongous watches and what Glycine has maintained in the past. Please don't sacrifice one for the other.
